DESIGN OF SCISSOR JACK


INTRODUCTION
A jack is a mechanical device used as lifting device to lift
heavy loads or apply great forces. jacks employ a screw
thread or hydraulic cylinder to apply linear forces. Car jacks
use mechanical advantage to allow us to lift a vehicle by
manual force alone. more powerful jack use hydraulic power
to provide more lift over greater distance. Engineering is the
act of directing the great source of power in nature for the
use and convenience of man. In the ancient time, man
applied engineering knowledge to reduce difficult and
complex task in to easy and simplified task.
DEFINITION
♦A scissor jack is a device constructed with a cross-hatch
mechanism, much like a scissor. a scissor jack is operated
by turning a lead screw. It is commonly used as car-jack in
the case of scissor jack, a small force applied in the
horizontal plane is used to raise or lower large load. A scissor
jack’s compressive force is obtained through the tension
force applied by its lead screw.
♦ A scissor jack provides the most economic dependable and
versatile methods of lifting loads, it has few moving parts,
which may only require lubrication.

WORKING PRINCIPLE OF SCISSOR JACK
It consists of four main parts driven by a power screw and
operated by turning a small crank that is ensures with to one
end of the scissor jack. When this crank turns, the screw turns
this raise the crank. The screw acts like gear mechanism it has
teeth (the screw thread), which turn and move the two arms
producing work. By turning this screw the scissor jack can lift a
heavy vehicle.
Since the jack have a few parts, it is easy to maintain.
PROBLEM STATEMENT

Since the aim of the project is to design


mechanical scissor jack, the main statement of the
project is to modify the handle and the head of
the power screw of the jack to reduce power loss
and to increase efficiency. Before we design the
machine, the head of the power screw is circular
plate with a hole which used to connect the
handle and the screw.

♦In the above machine, there is high power


loss. the hand force is not transfer completely
to the power screw. Because there is some
clearance between the hole of the head and the
handle diameter.
♦ But in our design, we are modifying the head of the power
screw and handle. The outside of the head of the screw is
hexagonal and the handle is solid circular shaft. The shaft
has an internal hexagonal hole which is connected to the
head of the screw.

♦The head of screw and the handle hole are fitted. Then
when we rotate apply force on the handle, the hand
force is completely transmitted to the power screw and
the power screw. So, in this cause we can reduce power
loss and the handle have good comfort to apply force on
the power screw.
OBJECTIVE
GENERAL OBJECTIVE
The main objective of this project is to design an efficient scissor jack
that can be used in the automobile sector.
Specific objectives
♦To select proper material selection for each part of Scissor jack,
♦ To show Detail Design Analysis of each components,
♦ To show Assembly drawing,
♦ To show the flow of manufacturing process of scissor jack.
METHODOLOGY
♦ By referring different literatures concerning with
the scissor jack to collect the most important
and required data’s/information’s.
♦ Preparing different possible mechanisms and
comparing them by different criteria through
design matrix and selecting the most efficient one.
SIGNIFICANCE
After completing this design the significances of this project are
♦Enables us to become confident in higher Mechanical design.
♦ Will enable us to develop dynamic design skill there by contributing to
the technological development of our country.
♦To produce an efficient model scissor jack and participate in market.
SCOPE
The main scope of this report is starting from
conducting literature review, conceptual designs
that fulfil the engineering design specification,
design analysis of the components up to
conducting manufacturing drawing and modelling
of the machine components.
DESIGN ANALYSIS
♦The general analysis consisting of the geometric analysis of force
and stress analysis, Plus, the material selection based on this
analysis includes the general consideration of the Analysis.
DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS:
a) the device is limited to an average load of 14.715KN load.
b) the device will have a maximum lift of 350mm and
minimum110mm.
c) this objective is desirable to be achieved through the rotation of
the screw to raise or lower the scissor platform.
d) the system must be operated on a flat surface.
MATERIAL SELLECTION
The following factors should be considered while
selecting the material:
•Availability of the materials,
•Suitability of the materials for the working
conditions in service,
•Design life and fatigue affected events
during the machine operation, and
•machining and other fabrication processes.

MANUFACTURING PROCESS

Manufacturing processes are the steps through


which raw materials are transformed into a final
product. The manufacturing process begins with
the creation of the materials from which the
design is made. These materials are then modified
through manufacturing processes to become the
required part.
To get the required shape of the scissor jack components we use the
following process with available machines:
♦Hack saw-which is used to cut the part with in the required
dimensions.
♦Lath machine-used to the processes of facing, turning, threading and
tapering.
♦milling machine-is used for facing and for making gears.
♦Drilling machine-which is used for making holes.
♦Welding machine-used for joining of parts
♦Grinding machine-this is used to have a good surface finish for each
individual parts of the mechanical scissor jack.
CONCLUTION

A Scissor jack is device which is used to lift a load and


designed depending on the desired load to lift and this
design is also done depending on the given specification
to with stand it and it is It also needs oiling of the screw.
RECOMMENDATION

Lubrication is necessary In order to have smooth lifting and


reduce wear and tears of the machine.
The design is applicable to vehicles of weighting maximum
load of 1.5 tones. over 1.5 tones shouldn’t be carried.
