INTRODUCTION
 Rabindranath tagore was a popular
poet, novelist, musician, painter and
playwright who reshaped bengali
literature.
BIRTH
 The youngest of 13 surviving children
tagore was born on 7th may 1861.

 Father-Maharishi Debendranath Tagore

 Mother- sarada devi


CHILDHOOD
EDUCATION
 Studied at Bengal academy on history
and culture.

 He enrolled at public school at Brighton


in England in 1878 for law.

 He returned degreeless to Bengal in


1880.
PERSONAL LIFE
He married Mrinalini devi raichaudhri on
9th dec, 1883

Had five children of which 2 died early

He started managing his family’s vast


estate in shilaidaha now in Bangladesh
HIS DREAM- SHANTINEKATAN
Shantiniketan - An ashram.

It included a prayer hall named “THE


MANDIR”.

It had huge library.


ACHIEVEMENT
On 14th November 1913 tagore won
NOBEL PRIZE in literature.

He was first Asian to achieve Nobel prize


in literature.

In 1915 tagore was knighted by British


crown but he refused.
CONTRIBUTION
In 1930- Opened GURUVAYOOR
TEMPLE for dalits

Helped dalits along with donors and


scholars

Initiated rural reconstruction with


economist Leonard establishing

TRAVELS
 He visited more than 30 countries across 5
continents

 Familiarized Non Indian audiences with


his political ideas

 His essay “Nationalization in India” was


praised in most countries

 He was invited by Peruvian government
and also traveled to Mexico.

 Each government pledged US$100000 for


his Shantiniketan.

 On 14th July 1927 Tagore and two
companions toured south east Africa

 During 1930 he met notable


contemporaries like ALBERT EINSTEIN ,
Robert frost, etc

 His work were known for rhythm,
optimism, and lyrics.

 Some of his novels are chaturanga,


shesher kobita, gitanjali, etc
MUSIC AND ART

 Tagore composed more than 2230 songs

 At 60s he started drawing and painting


works

 Tagores political tought was complex.

 He supported imperialism and supported


Indian nationalist

 He followed Gandhi's rule of life

IMPACT

 Tagore's Bengali-language writings—the


1939 Rabīndra Rachanāvalī—is also
canonised as one of Bengal's greatest
cultural treasures.

 Tagore himself was proclaimed "the


greatest poet India has produced"
END YEARS

 To the end, Tagore scrutinized orthodoxy.

 Tagore's last four years were marked by


chronic pain and two long periods of
illness.

 The poetry Tagore wrote in these years is


among his finest, and is distinctive for its
preoccupation with death.
 After extended suffering, Tagore died on 7
August 1941in an upstairs room of the
Jorasanko mansion in which he was raised
 His death anniversary is mourned across
the Bengali-speaking world.
