Setup Shots ...
These opening shots instantly introduce the setting and the key characters.

Both are long shots as it establishes the atmosphere and the setting for the film. It presents it as a culture island that is full of
happiness and life due to the facial expressions of the key character on the left, but also the blue sky and the clear water ,
combined with the amount of of nature. To reinforce this ideology of a tropical paradise Disney have used high key lighting
combined with bright, vibrant colours that catch your attention in a positive light.

Not only that but the use of the wooden boats infers the primitive lifestyle they lead, therefore symbolising the lack of technology,
making the film almost timeless as they haven't specified on a particular time period.
Sound:
As these shots are playing there is some dramatic, fast past music that it introduced the emotional
pleasures of excitement and helps to foreshadow the dangerous journey they will undertake.

Initially the music is overpowered by the narrator, who is one of the characters, she narrating the films
storyline and introducing the setting. The language used is indirect and is all inclusive as the film has a wide
target audience that include young children meaning dialogue needs to be simple yet intriguing.

There is a shift in the music as it begins to introduce the main characters and their dialogue begins. The
soundtrack becomes positive and upbeat, which is iconographic of the setting as the drums reflect the tribal
imagery within the film.
Lighting:
Throughout the trailer we see a dramatic transition in lighting to show
the progression of the story and change in atmosphere.

Lighting is a key element to symbolise the tone and foreshadowing of bad

events, as in these three screenshots you can see the dramatic change.

High key lighting and bright colours in the first image present the island
as a positive, safe and happy environment.
Where in the second photo it uses low key lighting with more pastel
colours giving the screen a warm glow, giving connotation a romantic
and inspiring surroundings.

This contrast massively with the final image as the dark colours and
lighting are a convention of both evil and darkness for the key
characters. Not only that but the use of raging oranger fire reinforces
the symbolism of danger and possibly forthcoming death.
Other Shots:
Throughout the trailer a range of shots is used, one of these is
the use of close ups, these are used in order for close detailed to
be seen such as facial expressions, forming a reaction shot.

Not only that but Mid Shots are also used, in the image it is
used to present female empowerment, challenging the
traditional stereotypes. This can been seen through her
facial expressions as well as her strong stature, we also know
that she is heading into danger due to the tense music and
the sky colour and lighting.
Production Process:
The key ambition of the trailer is to make is to impact and present intriguing story that gets film audiences
emotionally involved
Most trailers have a three sections that reflect the structure of a full length film.
They start with a beginning that lays out the premise of the story, in this case it is the narrator and the shots of
the island.
The middle develops the story further and usually ends with a dramatic climax, the narrator introduce the dark
adventure they will embark on.
Ending the trailer usually features a strong piece of "signature music" that's dramatic which is partnered with a
visual montage of powerful and emotional moments of the film and may also contain a cast run if there are stars
that could help sell the movie, however in Moana trailer it informs the audience of what other films were produced
by the technical cast, who create the songs and music and other key information eg.the release date:
Production process:
Job roles in animation - how they contribute to the final product:

Director- John musker & Ron Clements. They work with the actors and technical crew and coach them in order
to establish the vision they have in their mind for the final edit of the film.

Producer- Nicole Hearson, John Lasseter, Osnat Shure. They are in control of various aspects of film production
such as selecting script, overseeing directing and editing and the coordination of the film,

Animator- They are an artist who create multiple images known as frames which create an illusion of movement
when put in sequence at rapid pace.

Environment artist- They create the setting by going on a location scout taking inspiration from different place,
taking image in order to create the exact surrounding from the film.

Character modeller- They design and make the characters and props to their 3D models
Animation Process:
This is started when an initial idea is created, once this has been established it is then developed into a
narrative, with characters included, from this a detailed script is produced, from here the idea is pitched
to animation companies, when receiving feedback if the idea is granted “green lit” then the creative process
can begin.

Style Frames & Treatment, this is the stage when they create a number of key frames so you can see
exactly how the video will look - these are not just sketched storyboard frames. At this point the written
treatment is created, which works alongside the script. The next step is creating the style working with
designers and illustrators, and further going on to create style frames, not only that but the voice overs
and actors would be acquired. Once this has been finalised, the blueprint for the film is produced.
LO2:
Target Audience for Moana:
As Moana is another one of Disney well known animations that are aimed at families,it will have the same target
audience. It will fit into the social category of love and belonging. As the story itself has themes of how important
both family and culture is in a person's life.

Using audience segmentation Disney’s primary audience for their films are young children and families. So using their
typical demographic they focus on young females and males from 0<15 as well as young mothers and fathers 24<35.
Unusually the marketing isn’t tailored for Socio-economic groups as Disney is a worldwide company that provides easy
access whatever your social status is. This is helped as each film comes in various languages so they attract a large
audience across the globe, However it will appeal to those share a similar culture. However the Goe-demographic may
mean that it targets more people in cities as that’s where Disney locate their large Disney stores and they are
always full of the latests films merch and this can be exclusive to these stores sometimes. Using Psychographics and
the VALS frameworks, Both Maker and Believers would watch Moana as they are centered around family and
community as well they are loyal to establish brand such as Disney.

So Moana’s primary audience will be young children who are Disney’s typical main audience, whereas it will also receive
a secondary audience which will be made up from parents who have grown up surrounded by Disney and are viewers
once again with their children who are the new primary audience.
Disney/Moana Questionnaire:
Disney/Moana Questionnaire:
Primary Research:
After completing and receiving the results for my survey it has gave me insight and key information on how
others view both Moana as a film as well as Disney as an entire company. The feedback has been positive
in the majority as most people (87.5%)have watched a Disney film in the last year and 75% of people would
recommend or consider recommending another Disney film. This shows that as a company Disney is
successful as it maintains it renowned reputation and is successful at advertising to its target audience for
any new films/ products Not only that but I have found out that overall (68.8%) enjoy animated film for
the characters and the animations themselves. Disney are renowned for their story lines and character, I
know this as this is supported in my questionnaire, where 68.8% say this is the reason they enjoy animated
films. Not only that but after this survey I am now aware that even though everyone enjoys the same film
each person has a connection with a Disney animation film from the first created, showing how they reach
a wide variety of people and that the animations are all effective whether it be the very first created with
the classic and original animations or the very latest CGI movies.
