Nature of Investments
• Financial instrument (asset)
• Are recognized when the entity becomes a
party to the contractual provisions of the
instrument
Classification of Investments
• Corporations can invest in:
– Debt securities: money-market, bonds,
commercial paper
– Equity securities: preferred and common shares
• Reasons to invest:
– Passive investments: use excess cash, generate
investment income
– Strategic investments: to influence or control
another company

• Equity Security – representing ownership (stock) in a


company or rights to acquire ownership interest at
an agreed upon or determinable price

• Debt Security – representing a creditor relationship


with an enterprise
