• Drama comes from a Greek word
“dran” which means TO ACT
• It is written with the intention to be
performed in front of an audience.
• Its elements are;
- Character, Theme, Plot, Conflict,
Setting, Costumes, Stage, Sound effects,
Lights

Japan. He is known for writing
plays that communicate messages
to the audience through the use of
masks that show strong facial
expressions.

featuring issues and
themes relating to Afro-
Asian society.
VARIOUS FORMS OF AFRO-ASIAN
• Japanese drama
Noh- the most notable form of drama in japan.
- It is short but very symbolical. It is performed at a slow
pace to achieve a tragic effect because it usually has a tragic
ending. It also includes famous lines from japanese and
chinese poetry.
-Only male actors are allowed to perform the noh.

•Chinese drama
- It is rooted from the interest of the chinese emperor to
promote the arts, specially music and dance.
- Emperor Hsuan Tsun or Ming Huang
- Established a school called College Of Pear Orchard for
this purpose.
- Many chinese stage actors treat him as the patron saint
of chines drama.
- Plays during this time had dramatic and sentimental themes
centering on heroes.
• Sanskrit drama
- Part of india’s classical literature (sanskrit literature) which
dates from the 1st century.
- Its main characters include a hero (nayaka), heroine(
nayika), or clown (vidusaka).
• Kalidasa
−It is known as India’s greatest sanskrit dramatist in the 3rd
and 4th century.
−Wrote Malavika and Agnimitra, Vikramorvasiyam or
Pertaining to Vikrima and Urvashi and the Recognition
of Shakuntala (most famous play)
•African drama
- It is inspired by rituals which involve chants
and rhythmic dances and songs.
- Its themes are related to having a
bountiful harvest, connecting with
natural elements by calling on the rain,
sun, etc.
- It usually reflect the Africans’ way of life.
