Abstract

In the previous semester we undertook a theoretical approach to magnetostriction and how we

can use it to harvest energy in various ways.

Harvesting electrical energy from ambient vibration is one of the most interesting topic for
present researchers. This technology can be utilized effectively in various field. The paper deals
with such technology in theoretical implementation which is based on a power generator using
Fe-Ga alloy & Terfenol-D, with large inverse magnetostrictive effect, good machinability and
high ductility. In this paper, a very user friendly system of such prototype sensor has been
modelled. Such model is very effective for analyzing & visualizing the coupling characteristics
of any magnetostrictive energy harvester having parallel beam structure. Various parameters
have been analyzed & optimized. It is seen that the most efficient prototypes can able to generate
several tens of voltage. The input force is assumed to be continuous to get a continuous output
characteristics. The continuous output voltage can be rectified & stored in a secondary cell for
further use of electrical energy. The modelling is very effective in the field of energy harvesting,
vibrational control & materials science.

This forms the basis for our project in this semester.

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1 MOTIVATION FOR THIS WORK & STATE OF ART

The world is suffering for shortage of power production to match up the tremendously increasing
load demand throughout the world. Also inventors around the world have tried turn the non-
conventional energy sources into large scale quantities of usable electricity. One certain type
those energy is wave energy. The attempts to convert this energy into electricity has been
unfortunately characterized by the use of power generation technologies with moving parts,
resulting high operating & maintenance costs and need for large amount of structural mass,
which in turn drives up capital costs.

In the past decade, a new research is ongoing with most interest which is the magnetostrictive
effects of few materials. These materials are now the prior interest to scientists for energy
harvestation. Our aim from the beginning is to find out & work on a project which depicts
different methodologies to harvest energy in a large scale with very less capital cost & which will
also nature friendly. Most of the power generation plants pollute the nature in a huge rate causing
global warming & other abrupt effects. So we should look after & also need to find out an eco-
friendly way to generate electricity.

Since magnetostriction is a completely new topic & methodology for energy harvestation, it
creates huge curiosities among scientists. Its inverse effect can able to generate electricity which
in turn can be used in large scale in a cost effective way with a very high efficiency.

It is a breakthrough technology to produce energy from vibration. Energy harvesting from

ambient vibrations has been in the spotlight recently. Because vibration based power generation
technology can be utilized effectively in various fields. The technology is also useful for wireless
sensor network in automobile where vibration from engine & road is available for power supply
sensors & electronics. Power generation from vibrations is also beneficial in health monitoring
system for bridge & factory, where battery replacement of the device placed in the structure or
