ARACHNE : THE FIRST

SPIDER
HISTORICAL INFO
 Derived from Greek mythology (and later Roman
mythology)
 Arachne from Greek word : ἀράχνη meaning
“spider”, cognate with Latin araneus
 Arachne was a talented mortal weaver who challenged
Athena, goddess of wisdom, war, and crafts, to a weaving
contest; this hubris resulted in her being transformed into a
spider.
 We adapted mostly from the Roman poet Ovid version
of Arachne that appaears in the Metamorphoses.
OVID’S VERSION OF ARACHNE
In this version, Arachne was a shepher’s daughter
who began weaving at an early age. She became a
great weaver, boasted that her skill was greater than
that of Athena, and refused to acknowledge that her
skill came, in part at least, from the goddess. Athena
took offense and set up a contest between them.
Presenting herself as an old lady, she approached
the boasting girl and warned : “You can never
compare to any of the gods. Plead for the
forgiveness and Athena might spare your soul.”
OVID’S VERSION OF ARACHNE
“Ha! I only speak the truth and if Athena thinks otherwise then let
her come down and challenge me herself,” Arachne replied.
Athena removed her disguise and appeared in shimmering glory,
clad in a sparkling white chiffon. The two began weaving straight
away. Athena’s weaving represented four separate contests
between mortals and the gods. Arachne’s weaving depicted ways
that the gods has misled and abused mortals, particularly Zeus,
tricking and seducing many women. When Athena saw that
Arachne had not only insulted the gods but done so with a work
far more beautiful than Athena’s own, she was enraged. She
ripped Arachne’s work to shreds and hit her on the head three
times. Terrified and ashamed, Arachne hanged herself.
OVID’S VERSION OF ARACHNE
Then Athena said, “Live on then, and yet hang, condemned
one, but, lest you are careless in the future, this same
condition is declared, in punishment, against your
descendants, to the last generation!” After saying this, she
sprinkled her with the juice of Hecate’s herb, and
immediately at the touch of this dark poison, Arachne’s hair
fell out. With it went her nose and ears, her head shrank to
the smallest size, and her whole body became tiny. Her
slender fingers stuck to her sides as legs, the rest is belly,
from which she still spins a thread, and, as a spider, weaves
her ancient web. This showed how goddesses punished
mortals who dared to insult them.
PLOT
Arachne was a gifted weaver. Her tapestries
were admired by people all over the world. She
would weave day and night. She boasted about
being a better weaver than even the goddess
Athena herself, who was the goddess of crafts
and warfare. After hearing Arachne’s statement,
Athena confronted her and a contest was
planned to see who was the better weaver. The
loser of the contest could never weave on their
loom again.
After both of them were finished with their tapestries,
it was their time to choose a winner. Athena’s tapestry
was beautiful; it showed her winning a competition
between herself and Poseidon. Arachne’s tapestry was
breathtaking, it was so beautiful that it seemed like
the images on the fabric were alive. Even Athena
herself stood in awe after seeing it. Unfortunately, the
work of Arachne was one that showed the God’s past
embarassments. Athena did not take the offense
lightly. She immediately ripped Arachne’s tapestry
while casting a curse on her to become a spider for the
rest of her life, so that she could weave forever.

SPIDER’S SYMBOLLIZATION IN ARACHNE

Spider is the final form of Arachne after been casted a

spell to make her weave for the rest of her life by
Athena. Spider is an ancient symbol of MYSTERY,
POWER, and GROWTH. Just as the spider weaves a
web, so too must we weave our own lives. The spider
symbol meaning here serves as the reminder of the
character of Arachne herself, being too proud to the
point of insulting God and was cursed to remain as a
spider for the rest of her life, and that our choices
construct our lives. In many myths, both spider and
web are symbolic of fate, destiny, and the crazy ways
we cross paths in life’s diverse web. When we see our
decisions, choices and actions as far-reaching, effective
tools in life – we can see how we weave a web that can
either serve us or enslave us. The spider symbol
meaning beckons us to be mindful of our behaviours –
be smart about the life we weave for ourselves.
