CONCEPT OF OPERATIONS
Community Response:
• Secure area
• Set up access control zones
• Implement immediate care of injured
• Initiate protective actions for affected public

Provincial Response:
• Activation of Provincial Emergency Operations Centre
• Environmental radiation monitoring
• Radiation Health Response Plan for treatment of exposed and/or
contaminated persons
• Ministry of Labour ensures emergency worker safety
• Other response measures as required based on technical and operational
assessments

RADIATION CONTAMINATION ZONES
Buffer Zone Restricted Zone
• The area within which exposure control
measures are required

Buffer Zone

Restricted Zone • Provides a buffer area beyond the Restricted


Zone, where limited measures of radioactivity
are detected
• Initially delineated based on the results of
preliminary field monitoring
• Ingestion control measures may be applied
based on guidance provided by Protective
Action Levels

COMMUNICATING PROTECTIVE AND
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES
Emergency Information
Provide the general public accurate and timely information on the
status of the emergency and the measures being taken to deal with it

Emergency Bulletins
Emergency Bulletins are issued through the media to provide
emergency direction and guidance to the affected public to ensure
their safety and welfare

Province utilizes: Red Alerts, Social Media, SMS, Twitter, media

CONCLUSION

• Ontario has a detailed nuclear emergency response plan to respond


to a radiological event
• Significant radiological resources and expertise are available which
are brought together in a coordinated fashion
• The Province is able to communicate effective and promptly with
affected citizens
