Introduction

Homework (HW) is still controversial :


Students don’t like HW but think that it is usefull for them (Hallam, 2004)
In Turanli’s research (2009)  HW doesn’t make student motivated or
understand the lesson but could improve their study time.
HW provides student to practice and improve critical and problem solving
skills (Cuadros et al, 2007)

The difficulty of the problem students need help from other family
member  HW could improve communication between students, teachers
and parents.
Finland education  high quality education in the world : short school
hours, no assign task until 4th grade. HW and test only given to teenage
students.

Cooper (Morgenweck, 2006) stated that HW has the greatest effect on


the achievement of high school students but minimal effect on elementary
students

This study aim to identify elementary student and teacher perception to


some HW isues.

Students appreciate the teachers who regularly assign reasonable amount


and difficulty of HW assignment.

Teacher Perception

HW is one method to increase student engagement and time with academic


task. Student who complete HW academically outperform than student who
do not complete HW.
The reason teacher give HW : help student practice skills, prepare for exam,
develop good work habits, life skill, critical thinking and motivate student to
learn.

129 fifth grade students (70 boys and 59 girls) and 15 teachers from three
different school around Semarang, Central Java.
Data were analyzed by using descriptive analysis

Students and teachers viewed HW is important. Mostly the assignment were exercise (91%) and just only (2%) for
reading. The purpose of HW not only to increase students skiils but also develop life skill

The impact of homework : reducing play increase achievement (41%) score and skiils (33%)

The most reason for not doing HW because they forgot (58%). So,it is important for students and parents to check
the assignment book daily.

In case students have difficulties in doing their assignment, they will seek help from the tutor (33%) and mother (32%).
Seeking help from family members is common (Morgenweck, 2006) but seeking help from tutor as the fisrt person
seems to be a new finding.

Checking the assignment book : 26% students viewed their parents checked their assignment book daily but 23%
viewed their parents never checked the book. Maybe this was one of the cause student forgot the assignment because
they still need external control.

Difference between boys and girls : the second and third reason girls didn’t do their HW because the assignment is difficult (20%)
and lazy (8%) but for boys is because they are lazy (17%) and the assignment is difficult (9%). Girls exhibit more desirable work
habits and attitudes toward HW (Hong, Wan, Peng, 2011). The level of difficulties in HW assignment need to be considered appropriate
