EMPOWERING PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY

COPING
THROUGH THE DEVELOPMENT OF ONE'S

MECHANISM
COPING
Coping means to invest own conscious
effort, to solve personal and
interpersonal problems, in order to
try to master, minimize or tolerate
stress and conflict.
COPING
Coping enables a person to seek ways for
to successfully deal with difficulties or
circumstances.
ADAPTIVE STRATEGY
An adaptive strategy is a coping
strategy that reduces stress and able
to solve a problem.
MALADAPTIVE STRATEGY
A maladaptive strategy is a non-
coping, unconscious strategy to
reduce anxiety arising from a
potential harmful stimuli
COPING MECHANISM
Coping mechanisms are ways to which
external or internal stress is
managed, adapted to or acted upon.
It can be also described as “survival
skills”, which refers to the methods that
people adopt to deal with life
difficulties that causes them stress,
pain, and/or trauma.
TYPES OF COPING
MECHANISMS/STRATEGIES
Classification of these strategies into a
broader architecture has not been agreed
upon. Common distinctions are often made
between various contrasting strategies.
Written for instance, identifies four
types of coping strategies:
FOUR TYPES

occur when the person modifies the
way they think

employing denial, or distancing oneself from

the problem
APPRAISAL-FOCUSED
STRATEGIES
People may alter the way they think
about a problem by altering their
goals and values, such as by seeing
the humor in a situation.
PROBLEM-FOCUSED
STRATEGIES
People using problem-focused
strategies try to deal with the cause
of their problem. They do this by
finding out information on the
problem and learning new skills to
manage the problem.
PROBLEM-FOCUSED
STRATEGIES
Problem-focused coping is aimed at
changing or eliminating the source of
the stress.
EMOTION-FOCUSED
STRATEGIES
Emotion-focused strategies involve:

Releasing Distracting Managing Medidating Using systematic

emotions feelings techniques
EMOTION-FOCUSED
STRATEGIES
Emotion-focused coping "is oriented
toward managing the emotions that
accompany the perception of stress".
EMOTION-FOCUSED
STRATEGIES
Emotion-focused coping is a mechanism
to alleviate distress by minimizing,
reducing, or preventing, the
emotional components of a stressor.
This mechanism can be applied through a
variety of ways, such as:

Seeking Reappraising Accepting Exercisi

ADAPTIVE/POSITIVE
STRATEGY
One positive coping strategy,
anticipating a problem, is known as
proactive coping. Anticipation is when
one reduces the stress of some
difficult challenge by anticipating
what it will be like and preparing for
how one is going to cope with it.
ADAPTIVE/POSITIVE
STRATEGY
Two others are social coping, such as
seeking social support from others,
and meaning-focused coping, in which
the person concentrates on deriving
meaning from the stressful experience.
ADAPTIVE/POSITIVE
STRATEGY
Adequate nutrition, exercise, sleep
contribute to stress management, as do
physical fitness and relaxation
techniques such as progressive muscle
relaxation.
ADAPTIVE/POSITIVE
STRATEGY
Humor used as a positive coping
strategy may have useful benefits to
emotional and mental health well-
being. This coping strategy
corresponds with positive emotional
states and is known to be an indicator
of mental health.
ADAPTIVE/POSITIVE
STRATEGY
While dealing with stress it is
important to deal with your physical,
mental, and social well being. One
should maintain one's health and learn
to relax if one finds oneself under
stress.
MALADAPTIVE/
NEGATIVE STRATEGY
A maladaptive coping technique will
just reduce symptoms while
maintaining and strengthening the
disorder. Maladaptive techniques are
more effective in the short term
rather than long term coping process.
This mechanism can be applied through a
variety of ways, such as:

Dissociation Sensitization Safety Avoidance Escapism

behaviors coping
MALADAPTIVE/
NEGATIVE STRATEGY
These coping strategies interfere with
the person's ability to unlearn, or
break apart, the paired association
between the situation and the
associated anxiety symptoms. These are
maladaptive strategies as they serve to
maintain the disorder.
HEALTH-FOCUSED
COPING
Health-focused coping acknowledges
that all strategies a person uses are
aimed at reducing distress and may
initially be effective.
Healthy strategies are those that are
likely to help a person cope and have
no negative consequences. The coping
planning framework groups these into
self-soothing (e.g., deep breathing,
coping self-talk, positive self-talk
or mindfulness), relaxing or
distracting activities, social
support, and seeking support from
health professionals if personal
strategies are not effective.
NOW, THE QUESTION IS

HOW DOES
THIS HELP THE
COMMUNITY?
HOW?
A proper treating of a problem helps
lessening anxiousness and difficulties
between interpersonal relations in the
community. This help us to clearly deal
with the situation between each people.
HOW?
This also helps an individual to choose
more consciously to prevent issues in
the community. Betterment will be
achieved if everyone has a healthy
coping strategy.
