Look at the picture below!

From some of the mixture, can you please mention which one included a
mixture of homogeneous and heterogeneous?

Water + sugar Water + sand Water + salt Water + flour

Based on the particle size,

Solution Colloids Suspension

How to differentiate between the three

mixtures?
Analyze the mixed in the table below!
The mixture has properties soluble, homogeneous, stable, does not
leave residues and continue the light called a true solution.

The mixture has properties soluble, homogeneous, stable, does not

leave residues and light scatter is called colloids.

The mixture has properties insoluble, heterogeneous, unstable,

leaving a residue is called a suspension.

The colloidal system is named by the
dispersed phase and its dispersing
medium, for example the colloid with
the dispersed phase of the liquid in
the liquid dispersing medium, called
the emulsion.
Types of Colloids

Definition
Solution: is a dispersion system whose particle
size is so small, that it can not be distinguished
(observed) between particles, although using a
microscope with a high degree of enlargement.
Colloid: is a dispersion system with a particle
size larger than a solution, but smaller than the
suspension.
Suspension: is a dispersion system in which
particles are relatively uniformly distributed in the
dispersion medium and size larger than a solution
and colloids.
Characteristics of colloids
The colloidal system has distinctive properties,
which are different from other dispersion
systems. For example Tyndall effect. Tyndall effect
is scattered light beam by colloidal particles.

In addition to the properties mentioned above,

what other characteristic properties does the
colloidal system have? try to discuss with the
friend next to you!
The colloidal system has a uniqe characteristic, namely
Tyndall effect, Brown motion, Adsorbtion, Electrophoresis,
Dialysis, Coagulation, Colloidal Stability, Lycopene Colloid
and Colloid Liofob
Tyndall effect: scattered light beam by colloidal particles
Brown motion: the movement of colloidal particles that always
move straight but erratic (random motion / irregular).
Adsorbtion: the absorption of charge by the surfaces of
colloidal particles
Electrophoresis: the movement of colloidal particles in an
electric field
Dialysis: filtering of colloidal particles from adsorbed
ions
Coagulation: colloid agglomeration events due to
mechanical events
Colloidal stability: removes colloidal loads and
colloidal stabilizers
Colloid Liofil: the dispersed phase likes to attract the
dispersing medium
Colloid Liofob: the dispersed phase does not like to
attract the dispersing medium
The application of colloids is quite extensive in various areas
of life, be it in the fields of industry, textiles, food,
pharmaceuticals and so forth. In the field of food such as
butter, milk, jelly, etc.

Re-work in groups, group the following colloidal samples

according to the field, then analysis also which colloidal
properties to use!

a. Deodorant g. Sauce
b. Soap / detergent h. Nitric medicine
c. Establishment of delta at river mouth i. Purifying water
d. Bleaching of sugar cane j. mayonais
e. Soy sauce k. Cheese
f. Paint l. Dialysis

Environmental pollution
by Colloids

Work as a homework to predict Colloids not only have a positive impact on life,
some factors / reasons why that but can also have a negative impact. As in the
caused it to happen! picture above, that is in the picture a. Air pollution
by particulate matter
While in the picture b. Water pollution by
household waste
