SIGMA NOTATION

JOE JAYSON CALETENA

GENERAL ARTEMIO RICARTE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson the students will be able to:

1.illustrate a series
STEM_PC11SMI-Ih-1
2.differentiate a series from a sequence
STEM_PC11SMI-Ih-2
3. use the sigma notation to represent a series
STEM_PC11SMI-Ih-3

DEFINITION: ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE

An arithmetic sequence is a sequence in

which each term after the first is obtained by
adding a constant (called the common
difference) to the preceding term.
ACTIVITY 2: AM I AN ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE?

Determine whether the following sequence is an arithmetic

sequence or not. If it is an arithmetic sequence, determine
the common difference.
1. 2, 5, 8,11, 13, 15
2. 3, 8,13,18, 23
3. -2, 4, -10, 16, -22
4. 9, 18, 27, 36
5. N – 4, N – 2, N, N + 2, N + 4
DEFINITION: GEOMETRIC SEQUENCE

A geometric sequence is a sequence in

which each term after the first is obtained by
multiplying the preceding term by a constant
(called the common ratio).
ACTIVITY 3: AM I GEOMETRIC?
Determine whether the following sequence is an arithmetic
sequence or not. If it is an arithmetic sequence, determine the
common ratio.
1. 2, 4, 8, 16, 32
2. 1/5, -2/25, 4/125
3. 5, 10, 20, 30, 60, 120
4. 4/3, 8/9, 16/27
5. 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36
DEFINITION: SERIES
A series represents the sum of the terms of a
sequence.
