The breeding in captivity.

• The breeding in captivity of birds of prey is a

relatively recent phenomenon.
• Until a few years ago it was unthinkable to raise
raptors in captivity.
• It all started in 1945, Renz Waller, a prestigious
German falconer, carried out the first reproduction
of the peregrine falcon that was born naturally
within a breeding camera.
Breeding season

 It begins in each spring where it is the breeding

season of raptors, some get to reproduce every 2
times a year or start before spring.
Reproductive age

 The reproductive age of raptors begins after 2 years

or 3 years, depending on each species of bird.
 Males can reproduce as early as 1 and a half years of
age
 The females get to reproduce at 2 0r 3 years of age.
Young and adult
Reproduction method

 We have two methods of reproduction in captivity,

one is by copula or artificial insemination.
 Copula is the natural reproduction of male and
female.
 Artificial insemination is obtained by a male donor of
semen, which will then be deposited in the cloaca of
the female where it is absorbed by the oviduct where
its reproductive system is located.
Eggs laying

 A few days after the reproduction, the bird lays the

first egg and will continue to lay one every two and a
half days, the setting will depend on the food
obtained, mostly in captivity small and medium
birds of prey place 3 to 7 eggs and large raptors place
1 to 2 eggs.
Observation of the egg

 The viability of the egg is fundamental, it is

necessary to remove it momentarily to mark it and
weigh it, then take notes of the egg weight each day.
As the days of incubation pass, it is necessary to
check the state of the embryo and it is done with an
ovoscope so observe the development of the embryo.

Duration of egg formation

 It takes approximately 30 to 33 days to develop the

chicken inside the egg, which feeds on the yolk
during the development process.
Pigeon

 After 33 days they begin to break the shell

approximately weigh 35 grams and are totally
helpless, they will be fed every 4 hours, at 12 days of
age they will be permanently ringed, 45 days the
growth of the chicken lasts to reach the juvenile
stage.
