INTRODUCTION

A dietary supplement is a manufactured product intended

to supplement the diet when taken by mouth as a pill,
capsule, tablet, or liquid. A supplement can provide
nutrients either extracted from food sources or synthetic,
individually or in combination, in order to increase
thequantity of their consumption. Dietary supplements
can also contain substances that have not been confirmed
as being essential to life, but are marketed as having a
beneficial biological effect, such as plant pigments or
polyphenols.
Difference Between a Vitamin, a
Dietary Supplement, and Food?

• A food (something we must regularly consume

to support our body's energy needs),
• A vitamin (essential compounds contained in
the foods we eat), and
• A supplement (purposely ingesting additional
vitamins, above and beyond what’s in food).

Reasons Behind the use of
nutritional supplements
Difference between the use of dietary
supplements by men and women
5 Factors That Impact Women’s Health
Multiple and frequent pregnancies:
Multiple pregnancies, the uterus muscles become weak and may fail to contract
post-delivery. This condition can result in postpartum haemorrhage, i.e. excessive
loss of blood after delivery. Unfortunately, over 100000 women die each year from
pregnancy-related causes in India.

Ignorance and illiteracy:

Poor hygienic conditions can lead to many diseases like human papillomavirus
(HPV) infection which leads to cervical cancer. It could also lead to genital warts,
urinary tract infection (UTI) and other serious health issues.

Lack of Nutrition:
Lack of knowledge about dietary pattern during pregnancy and breastfeeding
stages is crucial, but in most cases, the women are not aware or ignorant towards
maternal and reproductive health. . More than half of women suffer from anaemia,
caused by malaria, hookworm infestation and from inadequate intake of iron and
folic acid..
Skewed Sex Ratio:
The Census of India 2011 has shown the lowest child sex ratio since India’s
independence in 1947. The rate has dropped to 914 females for every 1,000 male
children between 0 to 6 years old. This indicates the society’s preference for a male
child. This leads to women getting a sex determination test, multiple abortions, or
most commonly in rural areas, this leads to female infanticide. Diarrhoea remains
one of the major killers of young girls and a formidable challenge to the health
system.

Violent Crime against Women:

Violence against women is also a health problem, but it is sadly not considered one
and ignored. Every five minutes a violent crime is reported against women in
India. This is a serious issue because it depletes a woman’s emotional and physical
strength.
Why a woman should adapt to use dietary supplements?
Side Effects and Drug Interactions
• Dietary supplements may seem safe or mild because they’re natural.
Many think that something natural couldn’t hurt them.
• Yet, serious side effects and drug interactions can occur when taking
dietary supplements.
• For example, supplements such as aloe vera, fenugreek, and vanadium
may cause excessive bleeding during surgery or interact with
anesthetics.
• Other supplements may interfere with prescription medications. For
example, ginseng may interfere with the drug warfarin’s ability to
prevent blood clotting.
• St. John’s wort, which people often take for depression, can interact
with antidepressants, as well as many other prescription medications.
• Your health care provider is the best resource for assessing the risks and
benefits of taking a dietary supplement. He or she should know the
potential side effects of supplements—and the risk for interactions with
your other medications.
