Velocity
Objectives:
1. Express angle in degree,
minutes and seconds
2. Solve problems involving arc
length, angular velocity and
linear velocity.
Expressing angle measure in Degrees,
Minutes and Seconds.

A Degree is subdivided into minutes. And a minute

is further subdivided into seconds.

10 = 60’(60 minutes)
1’= 60”(60 seconds)
10 = 60’(60 minutes) 1’= 60”(60 seconds)
Express each angle measure in degrees, minutes,
and seconds:
a.) 21.560 b.) 10.50 c.) 35.540 d.) 160.110

Express each angle measure in decimal degrees, to

the nearest hundredth of a degree.
a.) 18015’15” b.) 25045’45”
c.) 315048’03” d.) -102002’02”

1. Find the length of the arc intercepted by a
central angle of 2.5 radians in a circle of radius
10cm.

2. Find the length of the arc intercepted by a

central angle of if the radius of the circle is
4
20mm.
The Angular Velocity of a point on a revolving ray
is the angular displacement per unit of time.
𝜽 = theta 𝟂 = omega

𝟂 = angular velocity

Angular velocity can be expressed in

𝜽 various units, such as revolutions per
𝟂=
𝒕 minute(rpm) or radians per
seconds(rad/s).

1.) Find the angular velocity 𝟂 in radians per

second of a wheel turning at 25rpm (revolutions
per minute)

2.) The wheel of a truck is turning at
6rps(revolutions per second). The wheel is 4ft in
diameter. Find the angular velocity in radians per
second.

3.) Calculate the angular velocity in radians per

minute of a Ferris wheel 250ft in diameter that
takes 45sec to rotate once. Express the answer
in terms of 𝜋.
Linear Velocity V of a point on a revolving ray is
defined to be the linear distance traveled by the
point per unit of time.

1.) The wheel of a truck is turning at
6rps(revolutions per second). The wheel is 4ft in
diameter. Find the linear velocity, in feet per
second, of a point on the rim of the wheel.
2.) Calculate the linear velocity if you sat on a
Ferris wheel with 250ft in diameter that takes
45sec to rotate once, to the nearest foot per
minute. Express the answer in terms of 𝜋.
