Mauryan Empire Beginnings and
Influence
■ Chandra Gupta is founder of the Mauryan dynasty (reigned c.321–c. 297 BCE) and
the first emperor to unify most of India under one administration
■ Built the capital city Pataliputra which was a center in which ambassadors came
from all around the world
■ The city was very extravagant as it boasted a palace and 570 watchtowers
■ The city was also a trade center, since Indian merchants traded with china
■ Megasthenes who was the greek ambassador found the area splendor greater than
the Persian cities.

■ Chandragupta adopted Persian style of government.

■ He also created an army of 500,000 whose chief minister was Kauitilya.
■ Kautiyla wrote a book known as Arthasthra which was about how rulers could a
mass power and also addressed wise administration of justice. Chandra Gupta
adopted his policies.
