WHAT IS MENTAL HEALTH?

• A state of well-being in which every


individual;
• realizes his or her own potential;
• can cope with normal stresses of life;
and
• is able to make a contribution to his or
her community.

PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL - BEING

• Carol D. Ryff (1989)


• Considers well-being as multidimensional
that covers different aspects.
• It is not only about having positive emotions
like feeling good or happy.
• It also refers to a number of positive
psychological functioning.
A. SELF ACCEPTANCE

• You accept yourself and have a


positive attitude with who you are. You
accept your good qualities, and
acknowledge that you have bad
qualities as well. Moreover, you accept
what happened to you in the past.
B. POSITIVE RELATIONS

• You have warm, trusting and


satisfying relationships with
others. You are concerned about
others and able to empathize with
what they are going through.
There is give and take in your
relationships.
C. AUTONOMY

• You are independent and can resist


social pressures. You can manage
or control your behavior. You
evaluate yourself based on your
own personal standards, instead on
relying on the evaluation of others.
D. ENVIRONMENTAL MASTERY

• You can manage your


environment and maximize
the opportunities available to
you that match your values
and suit your personal needs.
E. PURPOSE IN LIFE

• You strive to have meaning in


your life by setting goals and
having direction and intention
for what you do.
F. PERSONAL GROWTH

• You commit yourself to develop


your potential, to grow and
become the best person you can
be. You are open to experience as
you go through different stages of
your life.
WHY IS GOOD MENTAL HEALTH
& WELL-BEING NECESSARY?
• They are very important as they allow you to live fully
and to function at your best. For instance, you are
able to do tasks and perform an activity or job at the
optimum level of efficiency.
• Some people, when they are not okay, find it difficult
to focus, complete a task on time or do things very
well. Consequently, personal satisfaction is affected
and evaluation of the completed task by others will
also be affected.
WHY IS GOOD MENTAL HEALTH
& WELL-BEING NECESSARY?
• It enhances your ability to relate with others
well, resulting in satisfying, healthy
relationships. It puts you in good disposition
as you interact with others. Moreover, it
enables you to focus and make better
choices because you are clear with what you
want. It also enables you to handle the ups
and downs of life.
• It positively affects your physical health.
COMMON PROBLEM
AMONG
ADOLESCENTS
• It must be exciting to be at this
stage of your life. But sometimes,
there are some tough sides to it.
There are circumstances,
hindrances, or problems that
come along the way. It is normal.
It happens to everyone. You nay
encounter environmental
situations or stressful events that
can hamper your well-being. They
A. PROBLEM WITH
ATTENTION/FOCUSING
• Inability to focus may be temporary.
• It may be due to certain life events or
situations. However, if it becomes chronic
that it already affects your normal
functioning for quite a long time, it is
best then to consult people who can help
you.
A.1. ATTENTION DEFICIT
HYPERACTIVE DISORDER
• Chronic problem in attention,
hyperactivity, and/or impulsivity.
• A brain disorder marked by an
ongoing pattern of inattention
and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity
that interferes with functioning or
development.
B. MOOD SWINGS

• The shifting of moods.


• Someone can tend to be irritable and can be very
unpredictable.
• It is quite typical for adolescents, especially girls to be
moody.
• Hormones
• But if your mood swings, affect you functioning, your
activities and relationships with others, you will need to
think about what is going on with you. Why do you think
you behave in such a way? What triggers the shift in
moods? When do they usually occur?
B.1. MOOD DISORDERS
• They are characterized by emotional
disturbances that affect physical,
social, perceptual and cognitive
processes of an individual.
• Bipolar Disorder
• Manic-depressive illness
• It causes unusual shifts in mood, energy,
activity levels, and the ability to carry out
day-to-day tasks.
C. LOW SELF-ESTEEM
• Self-esteem refers to how well you regard
yourself.
• Teenagers with low self-esteem suffer
from inability to maximize their talents
and skills, believing that they do not
have what it takes to do or perform
tasks.
D. ANXIETY DISORDER
• This is a class of disorder marked by
extreme worry and apprehension.
• We worry, we feel nervous, and this
emotion is often accompanied by a
racing heart or trembling hands.
• It usually happens when we are
anticipating something we are fearful
of, or when faced with difficult

•  They have recurrent unexpected


panic attacks, which are sudden
periods of intense fear that may
include palpitations, pounding
heart, or accelerated heart rate;
sweating; trembling or shaking;
sensations of shortness of breath,
smothering, or choking; and
D.2. SOCIAL ANXIETY
DISORDER
• They have a marked fear of social
or performance situations in
which they expect to feel
embarrassed, judged, rejected, or
fearful of offending others.
E. DEPRESSION
• It is normal especially when faced with a lot
of problems, difficulties, or frustrations. It
becomes a cause of concern if the duration
lasts a number of weeks, and may have
already impaired you from doing your normal
activities. You probably miss classes, or
experience low or no energy to do your usual
routine. You may feel gloomy.
• Persistent depressive disorder, Perinatal
depression, Psychotic depression, Seasonal
F. EATING PROBLEMS
• Adolescents can be very conscious of their
body, but if they become overly conscious,
then there is a problem.
• Cause: unhealthy body image and over
concern for one’s physical looks
• Crash-dieting & cutting down on food
intake
F.1. ANOREXIA NERVOSA
• A psychological disorder wherein the person
keeps his/her weight as low as possible
because of faulty thinking that he/she is fat
and want to be thin as possible.
• Cuts down food intake, vomit food out,
exercise excessively
• Unhealthy behaviors (overly conscious of
food calories, leaving the table to secretly
vomit food out that has just been eaten,
taking appetite
F.2. BULIMIA NERVOSA
• It is characterized by a cycle of
bingeing or overeating then
purging what has been eaten by
vomiting to avoid gaining weight.
• The person feels that he/she has
lost control of eating, and there is
also distorted image of oneself.
G. SUBSTANCE ABUSE
• Harmful or hazardous use of
psychoactive substances,
including alcohol and illicit drugs.
• They affect the central nervous
system by altering brain function
resulting in changes in
perception, behavior and mood.

• Social Influence (Peer Pressure or Conformity)
• Social Events (partying, clubbing, gaming)
• Attraction to popular media work
• Boredom
• Rebellion
• Gain pseudo-confidence

H. CONDUCT DISORDER
• It is defined as repetitive and
persistent pattern of behavior
that violates the rights of others,
social norms, rules or laws.
• S/Sx: Aggressive behavior,
Bullying, Initiating Fights,
Destruction of Property, Theft
I. RISKY SEXUAL
BEHAVIOR
• It can be in the form of an early
start of sexual intercourse,
unprotected sex, or having
multiple sexual partners.
• STDs or Early/Unplanned
Pregnancies
J. SELF - INJURY
• It refers to the intentional damage to
the body tissues in connection with, or
to change a particular feeling or
emotion.
• Cutting, burning, marking, tattooing,
piercing, self – mutilation
• Attention seeking, rebellion, depression,
suicidal tendency
HOW TO BE WELL?
• Think bright. Think well.
• Do what is right. Take good action.
• Be on the move.
• Be strong. Manage your stress.
• Lift your self up. Build your confidence.
• Find peace inside and out.
• Develop life skills.
• Establish a support network.
• Help someone.
