PART INSTALLATION
• CARs Standard 571.13 installation of parts (general)
PARTS INVENTORY
• All parts that are to be used on aircraft must be
accounted for

• “Where did the parts come from?”


– Canadian Tire?
– Best buy?
– Or a reputable source for aircraft parts
PARTS INVENTORY
• Parts received
• Checked for proper paperwork
• Checked for condition
• Company tags / paperwork attached
• Placed into inventory
All parts are inventoried as they come in
and received from proper aircraft suppliers
by the stores personal.
Stores personal place these parts on the
shelf in the stores room in an order that
they can be found by use of part numbers
crossed over with a location.
Parts will come from the “stores dept” at
your place of work.
BONDED STORES
• Parts are kept and controlled in “Bonded
Stores”

• Must be control on what comes in and out


– includes people
• Only stores personal or authorized personal
should be allowed in the stores room
– ensures stores bonded and controlled
BONDED STORES
• Everything needs to be recorded when
removed

• All parts are signed out

• Can lead to an inventory problem


• Cost the company $$$$$
GETTING THE PARTS
• Part number(s) from the IPC
• Give the number(s) to the stores clerk

• Company procedures found in


– MCM and MPM
– all maintenance personnel are required to read and
understand
PARTS INVENTORY
• As mentioned all parts must be checked for its origin
before receiving

• Will have documentation stating that these parts


meet or exceed manufacturers requirements for use
on the aircraft

• What documentation?

• All documents kept on file

• CARs Standard 571 Appendix J: Form 1

• Or it will be given a trace or batch number


affixed to the bag of parts in a sticker form
PARTS INVENTORY
• Serialized or rotable parts usually get tags
– governors, carburetors, engines, electrical components,
fuel pumps, propellers etc.

• Consumables usually get stickers


– gaskets, hardware-nuts, bolts, washers, o-rings
TRACE OR BATCH NUMBERS
• Why does the stores dept use trace numbers?
When we use a part on the aircraft
we must know that the part we are
using is permitted to be used on a
airplane.

We must be sure that that part, even


though we got it from stores in our
place of employment, is correct and
has come from a reputable source.

• “undocumented part” means a part lacking
sufficient certification or history to make it
eligible for installation on an aircraft without
submitting it to a recertification process.

• Information Note:
• Pursuant to section 571.13of the CARs, a part is to be
inspected and its accompanying documentation verified prior
to installation in accordance with a procedure that the
Minister finds acceptable, having regard for the safety of the
aircraft, to ensure that the part conforms to its type design. In
the case of components removed from an aircraft for repair,
overhaul or exchange, traceability to their most recent
airworthy installation or to their most recent maintenance
action will constitute evidence of conformity to type design.

• Information Note:
A person who has reasonable grounds to believe that a part
installed or intended for installation in a type certified
aeronautical product that was not manufactured or certified in
accordance with the applicable regulations of the state of
production, or that is improperly marked, or that is documented
in such a manner as to mislead with regard to the origin, identity
or condition of the part shall submit to the Minister a report of
the suspected unapproved part, using the service difficulty
reporting system set out in section 521.401 of the CARs.
TRACE OR BATCH NUMBERS
• Ask the stores person for verification if ever you are
in doubt
– you want to be sure the parts you are using are correct

• After all you are signing the aircraft as airworthy


when the job is done

• Process to evaluate Undocumented Aircraft
Parts
TRACE OR BATCH NUMBERS
• Record parts used including trace numbers on
work orders / job cards

• Inventory , accounting purposes, cost per


airplane or component

• Reliability

• The job card also gives a detailed record of
what was done on the aircraft at that time

• The journey log will have an entry but not as


detailed as the work order or job card
AFTER THE PART IS REMOVED
• Change a PC12 fuel boost pump
– new pump installed with proper paperwork and
logbook entries made

• What happens to the part coming off?

• Garbage? Repair?
– how does it not get into another aircraft by
mistake?
QUARANTINE STORES
• Part should be tagged appropriately
– unserviceable, repairable
• Each company has their own tag system

• Part is given back to stores


• OR
• Placed in a secure area called “Quarantine”
QUARANTINE STORES
• Secure area for parts that are not fit for use on
an aircraft
– unserviceable tagged parts
– new parts with improper documentation
• Locked and separate from repairable parts

• Only authorized personnel are allowed access


for control purposes
QUARANTINE STORES
• What happens to items in Q stores?
– scrap, overhaul, repair

• DOM or QA will decide as they go through Q


stores periodically

• Main reason for Q stores is to keep U/S parts


from serviceable parts
