Making SEL a Whole School Commitment in CMSD

Every school in CMSD received this poster as a reminder of
the district’s commitment to social and emotional learning
(SEL). This power point is designed to help familiarize all staff
with the components of SEL to spark discussions about how
to bring them to life within school buildings.

What is Social and Emotional Learning?

Social and emotional learning (SEL) involves


processes through which children and adults
develop fundamental emotional and social
competencies to:
• understand and manage emotions
• set and achieve positive goals
• feel and show empathy for others
• establish and maintain positive relationships
• make responsible decisions.

SEL takes place within the context of safe and
participatory school, family, and community
environments that support children’s
development and provide opportunities and
recognition for successfully applying these
competencies.

Why SEL?
Science Links SEL to Student Gains:
• Social-emotional skills
• Improved attitudes about self, others, and school
• Positive classroom behavior
• 11 percentile-point gain on standardized achievement
tests

And Reduced Risks for Failure:


• Conduct problems
• Emotional distress

• Conditions for Learning Surveys
– Implemented in May 2008; administered annually
– New for 2012-2013 CFL benchmarks Early Fall, Late Winter
• PATHS
– Implemented in 2009-10 school year in PreK-2
– Implemented in 2010-11 school year in 3-5
– Current 2012-13 school year PreK-5
• Social & Emotional Learning Standards and Lesson Plans
– embedded into Scope & Sequence curriculum 2011-12 school
year & revised SS for 2012-13 school year
– Creation of SEL/Academic grade level lessons 2012-13 school
year
• Class Meetings
– Implementation via freshman seminar course
– Developing a Train the Trainer Plan for 2012-13 school year

o New for SY2013 will be implementing an RTI tab on School net

o 2012-13 Expansion of Ripple Curriculum for classroom center being explored

•FALL 2012-district wide anti-bullying initiative entitled "Not on our Watch." (N.O.W.)

o Effort was organized in collaboration with “Facing History and Ourselves.”


o Each school selected five to ten students in grades 8-12 to serve as the N.O.W.
