A.A.I.

It is a Public sector undertakings(PSU) which works under ministry of CIVIL Aviation. Setup under the act
of parliament in 1980’s.

AAI’s main work is to maintain the responsible for monitoring , maintaining and upgradation of existing
facilities and built new airports.

It provides Traffic management systems for air.

It manages 125 Airports in Indian territory.
Project Details-

Project Name - Modernization of Chennai Airport Phase 2

Project Budget – 2400 Cr

Client – AAI

Contractor – L&T ECC (B&F IC)

PMC – AECOM

Project Duration – 48 months

Project Scope – Phase 2 project is a Brownfield project , Its main aim is to first demolish the existing T2
and T3 terminal and than Construct an Integrated terminal with all modern facilities and services in it.
Project Objective

► The new facilities are envisaged to be developed as a modern terminal building fully equipped with
modern state-of-the-art infrastructure including multi-level car park for about 2000 cars, VIP cars and
buses.

F&B facilities, snack bars, travellers requisite (TR) / pharmaceutical shops, ATMs, etc.
► On the engineering front the terminal building will be equipped with modern IT solutions, CCTV,
security, building management system, airport systems, etc.
► On the eco-friendly front the new terminal building will be capable of solar power generation and it will
be GRIHA 4 star rating compliant.
Evaluation of Options-

Out of the 3 options 2nd one is selected

Advantages-
► Common facilities for better utilization during Off-peak hours

► Optimized processing area and provisions for International flows

► Centralized Duty Free with better retail opportunities

► Shorter phasing period

► Minimal interruption to existing buildings & operations

Disadvantages:
► Split Domestic operations
Learnings-

1.Studied DPR of the Project.

2.Tried to understand the methodology behind the selection of the particular alternative amongst all.

3. Had discussions regarding the same with Assistant general manager and consultant’s manager.

4. Get to know how the operations of an airport is carried out and terms used in it.

5. Studied the Demolition schedule and valuation report by Demolition contractor.

6. Get opportunity to work on the flood mitigation project undertaken by AAI to flood proofing of the airport.

7. Visit to Airside and Took Measurements of HFL

Key Learnings in Flood proofing and Mitigation
project-

1. Studied the DPR made by IIT-M and Understood methodology behind their report and suggestions.

2. Understood the Various Measures given by IIT-Madras

3. Under Immediate measures there was installation of Flood barriers.

4. Learnt How to get quotations from vendors by writing effective emails.

5. Made detailed estimated of the Flood barriers.

6. Made Material estimate for Compound wall Construction

7. IIT-M revised their drawings and resubmitted it because of some errors in the previous report.

8. Did the Detailed estimate for the material for the Drainage work project.
Cost of the Project

► Total cost based on the Preliminary design is estimated to be as follows

1. Civil & Finishing cost = 1207 Crore
2. Electrical works = 949 Crore
3. Airport system = 230 Crore
4. IT systems = 35 Crore
5. Total Project Cost = 2422 Crore

Cost of Flood barriers Project – 25.18 Crores Approx.

Material estimate for Compound wall construction – 16 lacs Approx.

Cost of Phase 1 RCC Drainage Construction- 168.53 Crores Approx..

Cost of Demolition of the Existing Facilities- 3.2 Crores Approx..

Flood Barriers

These are the Temporary Gate/Door or any Barrier, which allows the access of people in normal time but
does not allow the Flood water.

A Report is Prepared by me explaining the Different alternatives

That can be used instead of the conventional barriers.

Based on my Report The senior manager incorporated different barriers

Which increased the cost of Project by 2 Times. But increased the
functionality by many times.
Installing Flood proof doors would be wiser instead of Installing barriers
in front of Doors.
Revised Drainage work -
Drainage Project

► The Permanent Solution suggested by IIT-M was

that Construction/Widening of existing Drainages.
► IIT-M Collected the past 50 years data and put

It into a simulation software to compute the results

► The Drainage Size suggested by IIT-M was 14m

As per the 10+ year return period They also

written a Note in the Report where they Said that
We can also design the section for 5 year period but the size reduced than 12m.
► In the Earlier Report there were Flaws regarding the Invert level which was up to 1.2m different in actual
site, so they Corrected the report and issued the Phase 1 Drainage plan.
► The Approx. project cost calculated by me was 340crores, But for the latest revision the cost will be
165Crores approx. for phase 1.
Tendering Process

► Learnt about the Process of Floating the tender and the approvals required from Officials.

► Understood the Tender Document Forming Process and Different types of Tenders floated by AAI.

► Understood the Role of PMC in Global Tender.

► Different Documents and Experience required for the Contractor to Bid.

► Understood about Different Types of Bids and Qualifying Criteria of each.

► Calculated EMD required to be submitted for the Flood barriers Project

► Read & understood the different criteria's under which the Contract can be terminated etc.
