The Art Of Bernard Stanley Hoyes
Sanctified Joy
The cultural/racial mix found in the Caribbean may be
called a hybrid culture. The small nations of this area of
the world have created a powerful cultural influence,
spreading to the remote areas of the globe. From their
African based rituals to the Hispanic rhythms, a
confluence has occurred in the global crossroads of the
Caribbean. African and Hispanic cultures met and merged
in the Caribbean over 500 years ago and their roots have
not been eradicated. From these rich and diversified
cultures a new culture arose. The blending enhanced the
vibrant vitality each brought. The very identifiable traits
of these cultural societies are reflected in the Caribbean
arts. There is an ethical and religious basis for African art
that is still evidenced in the Caribbean, where African art
very often depicts ritual contexts dealing with the moral
and spiritual concerns of the human condition. Hoyes’
Caribbean art addresses the same issues.
Bernard Stanley Hoyes
“I have been a creator of art, symbols of ancestral echoes since a child in Jamaica...
The images I convey symbolize a culmination of these ancestral echoes brought to
classical form. They are contemporary, eternal in spirit and stand as praise to our
existence --past, present and future.”
In the 80's Bernard
Stanley Hoyes
began creating
works that recall
his African
Caribbean roots,
specifically the
rituals and
ceremonies of the

Bernard Stanley Hoyes began painting at an early age, selling his works to tourist to
supplement his family’s income. At the age of fifteen, he migrated to New York city. He
later received a Ford Foundation Scholarship sponsored by the Art Student League. He
then studied at the California College of Art and Crafts in Oakland and, receiving a
Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Painting and Design. As a child, Hoyes was nicknamed
“Spirit Sight” by his religious aunt. Upon viewing any of his work, it is easy to see why. A
native of Jamaica, spirituality is the dominant theme throughout much of the artist’s
oeuvre. Hoyes’ pieces are not only magnificently colorful, but full of magic, inspired by a
rich ancestral legacy.
