Overview

• In current document,
– There are many MIMO modes: OL SU-MIMO (diversity), OL SU-
MIMO (localized), CL SU-MIMO, OL MU-MIMO
– MaxMt and Event-driven feedback are TBD
• We need to have a feedback to support these MIMO mode
switching
– BS will always inform which mode to feedback
– MS can help BS to switch MIMO mode
Switching between OL MIMO and CL MIMO

• CL MIMO outperforms OL MIMO when MS speed is low, and OL MIMO

outperforms CL MIMO when MS speed is high
• MS can estimate its speed better than BS

Switching between SU MIMO and MU MIMO

• Depending on several factors such as number of receive antenna, antenna

correlation, number of MS, MS location (MS geometry and preferred beam vector)
etc, the optimal SU and MU switching point is different
• MS can help to choose which mode to operate (Details can be found in C80216-

MaxMt for MU-MIMO (1/2)

• BS will allocate K number of MS to a resource

depending on scheduler decision
• This K will be varying depending on the MS
feedback
• But MS does not know how many MSs (K) will
be multiplexed when it calculates CQI
• Efficient CQI estimation method (orthogonal
pairing assumption) has been adopted
• But if BS indicates maximum number of
multiplexed MS, we can reduce unnecessary CQI
mismatch further

MS can help to operate in right MIMO mode (MU-MIMO with 2 stream or 3 stream or 4 stream) by
means of reporting preferable MIMO mode.
This will reduce unnecessary CQI mismatch.
Note: RankKCQI is generated based on (K-1) orthogonal interferences.
Conclusion

• MaxMt for MU-MIMO CQI calculation shall be

indicated by BS
• Mode adaptation can be done with MS help
• To reduce feedback overhead, we further propose
event-driven mode adaptation feedback
– OL SU MIMO (Wideband), OL SU MIMO
(Narrowband), CL SU MIMO, OL MU MIMO

MIMO (MaxMt = 4), CL MU MIMO (MaxMt = 2), CL
MU MIMO (MaxMt = 3), CL MU MIMO (MaxMt = 4)
