Study this example:
Direct Speech:
The secretary of the Department of Education
said, “I am suspending classes in Metro Manila and
other provinces due to the super typhoon.”

Indirect Speech:
The secretary of the Department of Education
said that he was suspending classes in Metro
Manila and other provinces due to the super
typhoon.
A direct speech is saying exactly what
a person has said. When written, it is
enclosed in quotation marks. It is also
called quoted speech.

Example:
Antonnette said, “I appreciate my
teacher's way of teaching science.”
An indirect speech is used when the
original words of the person are said
using the words of the speaker. The
conjunction that is often used between
the first statement and what the person
said. It is also called reported speech.

Example:
Antonnette said that she appreciated
her teacher's way of teaching science.”
