Early History from ‘12th-15th Century’
• In 12th-century France, the courretiers de change were concerned with managing &
regulating the debts of agricultural communities on behalf of the banks. Because these men
also traded with debts, they could be called the 1st brokers.
• A common misbelief is that, in late 13th century Bruges, commodity traders gathered inside
the house of a man called ‘Van der Beurze’, & in 1449 they became the “Brugse Beurse”, In
Antwerp, Belgium, the family Van der Beurze had a building where most of the merchants of
that time gathered for trading.
• That idea quickly spread around Flanders & neighboring countries & “Beurzen” soon opened
in Ghent & Rotterdam. Later on, the Merchants of Venice were credited with trading govt.
securities as early as the 14th century. Soon after, bankers in the nearby cities of Pisa,
Verona, Genoa & Florence also began trading govt. securities.
• This was only possible because these were independent city-states ruled by a council of
influential citizens.
• Italian companies were also the 1st to issue shares.Companies in England & the low
countries followed in the 16th century.
The Dutch East India Company/United
East Indies Company
• In 1602, it was originally established as a chartered company to trade with
India & South East Asia.
• It was an early multinational company in its modern sense.
• Dutch govt. granted it a 21 year monopoly on the spice trade.
• In the early 1600s, by widely issuing bonds & shares of stock to the general
public it became world’s 1st formally listed public company.
• It was 1st corporation to be ever actually listed on an official stock exchange.
• The Amsterdam stock exchange was the 1st official stock exchange in the
world launched by VOC in 1611.
• Amsterdam based businessman “Joseph De La Vega’s” ‘Confusion de
Consfusiones (1688) was the earliest known book about stock trading & on
the inner workings of the stock market.

the dynamic economic activity.
• An economy where the stock market is on the rise is considered to be an up-
and coming economy.
• The stock market is often considered the primary indicator of a country’s
economic strength & development.
• Rising share prices, for instance, tend to be associated with increased business
investment & vice versa.
• Share price also affect the wealth of household & their consumption therefore,
Central Banks tend to keep an eye on the control & behavior of the stock
market & in general on the smooth operation of financial system functions.
