QUESTION?
• WILL AN EGG FLOAT IN SALT WATER?
• HOW MUCH SALT WILL IT TAKE TO MAKE THE
EGG FLOAT?
HYPOTHESIS:
IF THERE IS ENOUGH SALT MIXED
INTO THE WATER, THEN THE EGG
WILL FLOAT
MATERIALS:
• WATER • SPOON
• EGG(S) • LARGE POT
• (4) CUPS • MEASUREING
CUP
PROCEDURE:
• MAKE SURE EGGS ARE AT ROOM
TEMPERATURE BEFORE BEGINNING THE • ADD ¼ CUP PLAIN WATER TO CUP 1, ½
EXPERIMENT. CUP WATER TO CUP 2, AND ¾ CUP
• MIX 2 ½ CUPS WATER AND ½ CUP WATER TO CUP 3
OF SALT INTO THE LARGE POT AND • SLOWLY PLACE THE EGG USING THE
STIR UNTIL DISSOLVED (THIS MIGHT SPOON INTO EACH CUP STARTING
TAKE A WHILE). MAKE SURE THE SALT WITH #4. DOES THE EGG FLOAT?
IS COMPLETELY DISSOLVED.
• GO DOWN THE LINE OF CUPS UNTIL

RESULTS/ DATA

THE EGG FLOATED BEST IN THE CUP WITH THE MOST SALT WATER
IN IT (CUP 1). THE SECOND CUP HAD A LESSER AMOUNT OF SALT
WATER, SO THE EGG SEEMED LESS DENSE, BUT DID NOT
COMPLETELY FLOAT. IN THE LAST TWO CUPS THE EGG SUNK
DIRECTLY TO THE BOTTOM.
CONCLUSION:
THE DENSITY OF THE EGG WAS LOWER IN THE SOLUTION WITH MORE SALT, AND HIGHER IN THE
WATER WITH LESS SALT.
THE GREATER THE SALT, THE BETTER THE EGG FLOATED, LEADING ME TO BELIEVE THAT MY
HYPOTHESIS WAS CORRECT.
HAD THE EGG BEEN HARD BOILED, OR THE TEMPERATURE OF THE WATER CHANGE (COLDER OR
HOTTER) THE RESULTS MAY HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT.
