THE GIRL CHILD DISCUSSION

• What are three reasons why women face prejudice around the world?
• Do you think that equal education of girls and boys would provide more equal rights and less
discrimination against girls?
• Who should be in charge of making changes regarding the issues women are facing today?
• Why do you think people continue to commit those sins, even though there are laws against them in
some places?
• What do you think you can do to help?
TOPIC IN BRIEF: -

The disparity and inequality of sex ratio between men and women is quite embarrassing but nothing new
even in the twenty-first century. The government of almost all the countries has made special efforts to
deal with the gender inequality and in the developing and the emerging economies, a lot is still left
undone. Women empowerment is one of the key issues of this century. The government has developed
various schemes and plans that ensure the safety and the security of a girl child. In India, the Beti Bachao,
Beti Padhao yojana is working in full swing. And with the help of this scheme, the government has been
able to put a stop or at least has lowered the number of the female feticides. The Indian government
started this campaign with one hundred crore rupees. And slowly and gradually the government is
pumping in more funds to make this scheme work so that in the near there can be no discrimination
against the sex.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

• On January 22, 2016 the day Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced his scheme of “Beti Bachao,
Beti Padhao”.
• After the accomplishment of women in Rio, this scheme is upgraded to “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao”.
• This scheme aims at SAVING GIRL CHILD, EDUCATING THEM and LET THEM PLAY.
SEX RATIO IN INDIA & IT’S
DECLINATION..

• Sex ratio is defined as the number of females per thousand males. In India the sex ratio is not in favour
of females. The disturbing factor in the sex- ratio is its declining trend.Sex ratio in India, 2011 is 940
females per 1000 of males. Some states have certainly low sex ratio. E.g. Sex ratio in Haryana is 833
females per 1000 of males.
• Female Infanticide: The murder of a female infant. It occurs often as a deliberate murder or
abandonment of a young girl or infant.
• Peoples’ Perception: People in India consider girls as burden.
• Selective Abortion: Also called gender-selective abortion, sex-selective abortion, or female feticide
selective abortion. It involves the abortion of a fetus because it is a girl. There are reports of increasing
numbers of women being trafficked and sold for marriage in Rajasthan and Gujarat.
SURVEY MADE BY UN: -

The UN estimates that 700 go missing and are added to the ever increasing count of the ‘Missing Girl Child’
in India everyday. That means a loss of over 250,000 girl children every year and that figure is growing.
REASONS FOR LOW PARTICIPATION OF
WOMEN..

• Gender Inequality is strongly evident in the fields of sports.

• Less Opportunities in comparison to their male counterparts.
• Social Environment inhibits women from Sports participation.
• Lack Of Proper Facilities And Faculties are posing a big challenge.
REASONS FOR KILLING A GIRL CHILD

• Poverty
• Gender Discrimination
• Lack Of Education
• Traditional Practices
• Future Speculations(Education, Marriage, Dowry, etc.)
STOP FEMALE FOETICIDE:

• The 2001 census first revealed the abysmal sex ratios across India going as low as 793 girls for 1000 boys
in Punjab. That the situation has deteriorated further is evident by the July 2007 discoveries of skulls of
female fetuses found at the bottom of a defunct well.
1. REASONS FOR POOR LITERACY RATES..
2. GIRL’S EDUCATION..

• Discrimination: Girls are discriminated by not being allow to study.

• Household: Girls are only consider to do household activities so, they are denied from getting education.
• Lack Of Facilities: There are not proper facilities such as lack of sanitation and infrastructure, transport
facilities, etc.
• India’s present literacy rate is 74.04% which is below than the world’s average literacy rate i.e. 84%. At
present, India is the largest ill-literate populated country in the world. In India, there is a gender inequality
among the literacy rates. Literacy rate among Men is 82.14%, whereas among Women its 65.46%.
• Girls are sent to schools and colleges to study in a sort of forced social emancipation, but rarely are they
encouraged to pursue dreams of a career. There is proof enough of this in parents arranging marriages for
their girls at 18- 20 years of age.
• Higher education, where it is allowed is also often seen as a contributor to finding a groom.
PROGRAMMES INITIATED:

The major objective of this scheme is to make all girl child educated so that they can choose their paths
according to their wishes. As a matter of fact, due to this scheme, the school fees of the girl child has been
waived at the government schools. They can study at any government school without worrying about the
money. Apart from these, the government schools are also providing the mid-day meals to attract more
children.
