Simulation overview and use cases

This simulator is using the real OSS NetAct system, LTE network
live simulation and Optimizer radio network optimization tool in
this Capacity and Coverage Optimization use case.
The simulation begins with large geographical area with poor or
none coverage. With the following SON features the capacity and
coverage in the given area is automatically created and
optimized. The Coverage and Capacity optimization algorithm is
able to remove coverage hole resulting in good service quality for
the end users.
• Mobility Load Balancing
• Automatic Remote Electrical Tilt Optimization
• Downlink Transmit Power Optimization
• Mobility Robustness Hand Over location optimization
• Multitasking SON; prioritization

Coverage Capacity Optimization - Before and After

As a result of capacity and

coverage optimization, also this
area now will benefit from optimized
service quality for the end users.

There is a large geographical area

with poor of non existing coverage

Coverage optimization
RET and power optimization – result after 4 steps

Before After

NetAct Optimizer CCO algorithm detects coverage and/or capacity problems from collected
PM data and changes tilt and TXP configuration to solve problem

Capacity optimization

Throughput per PRB describes radio interface capacity.

Starting point was 3G network plan that causes ”overshooting” , thus in LTE  too little downtilt and therefore excessive
interference.
Use case example: Changed signalling conditions due to seasonal or landscape changes in the environment.

NetAct Optimizer CCO algorithm detects coverage and/or capacity problems from collected
PM data and changes tilt and TXP configuration to solve problem

CCO optimization through tilt and TXP optimization

To avoid conflict between SON algorithms, coordination is desired. Here tilt has higher priority
over TXP: NSN’s Multitasking SON coordinates all SON algorithm for maximum business
benefits.

3GPP ANR supported UEs)

Automated Neighbor Relation
real-time neighbor relation mgmt triggered by UE measurements

• ANR algorithm runs

on each BTS autonomously
• UE measurements and trigger
• reporting of PCI, request GID,
retrieve IP@, setup of X2

• Visualize hotspot LTE cells (colored) within

HSPA network (grey colors)
• Trigger LTE-HSPA neighbor relation by
"report" command or RLF condition of UE
• flexibly configure intra- and interRAT HO
paramters (Ax, Bx)
• observe ping-ping HO condition and remove
trough optimization of HO parameter with
SON mobility robustness algorithm

MRO
Handover optimization

Handover parameters such as offsets, TTT, thresholds etc. optimized based

on handover related PM data.
In initial configuration all cells used same default parameters

Cell Outage Compensation - Antenna Tilt Optimization
• Removes coverage holes by antenna tilt • Currently scope of optimization is total
optimization simulation area (configurable in future
e.g. after a cell outage release)
• Algorithm tries to optimize the antenna tilts of
all neighboring BTS in several steps, to perform
cell outage mitigation
• Coverage hole closed

Load Balancing Algorithm

• Load balancing algorithm runs on each BTS autonomously

• Algorithm tries to offload overloaded

cells via handover of cell-edge UEs
into neighbor cells
• Cell load data are negotiated
between neighbor BTS in order to
decide on those UE to handover, in
a way the number of unsatisfied UE
is minimized

• Cell-individual handover offsets are adjusted for each UE such that it will not immediately
handover back. (ping-pong)
