Acid Treatment Job

Objective

• Increase permeability by dissolving

clays and other pore plugging materials
such as Calcite near wellbore.
• Clays maybe naturally occuring
formation clays or those introduced from
completion, or workover fluids.
McLeod Guidelines
For General Conditions :

BHT > 225 F --- > 13.5 % HCl - 1.5 % HF

For Low Perm Zone 10 – 50 mD

Lo-Clay < 5 % --- > 6% HCl – 1.5% HF

--- > preflush 7.5% HCl or 10% Acetic Acid

Hi-Chlorite >5% --- > 10% Acetic Acid – 0.5% HF

--- > preflush 10% Acetic Acid
Running Stages
• Preflush : HCL is introduced to remove carbonates from the wellbore and adjacent
rocks. Also run to ensure flushing of CaCl2, NaCl, or KCl on any area where HF shall
be flowing. Some pre-flush also use aromatic solvent to remove paraffinic deposit.
When no carbonates present on the wellbore and formation, Diesel oil, kerosene,
crude oil, or NH4Cl can be used.
• HF-HCL stage : Solution often mixed with 1.5% HF + 13.5% HCl + anionic-nonionic
surfactant, and corrosion inhibitor. 75-150 gal/ft of sandstone formation open to
wellbore.
• Afterflush : 5-10 % HCl, 2% NH4CL, 5-10 % mutual solvent or clean filtered
kerosene, diesel oil+0.1% water-wetting non emulsifying surfactant. 200 gal/ft or
larger if precipitates are suspected to appear.
• Post Acid Treatment : Select and use demulsifier at high concentration, avoid
comingling of spent acid and salt water, minimize the concentration of fines and
precipitates.
General Requirement of Acidizing Run

• Filter all fluids through a two micron filter

• Pump all at low rate : 0.25 – 0.5 BPM
• Be aware that HF Acid spends rapidly so that it
needs to be removed within one hour after
treatment is completed to reduce damage due
to emulsions or insoluble precipitans.
