A. Natural Numbers

The set of numbers 1,2,3 … ( The symbol


means that the sequence goes on forever ) that we
see and use every day. The natural numbers are often
referred to as the counting numbers and the positive
integers
B. Whole Numbers

0,1,2,3, … The whole numbers are ussualy


considered to be exact ( e.g there are 4 tires on car, 8
legs on a spider ). But sometimes they are
approximate ( e.g there were 1000 people in the
crowd ) . Here they are, shown on the number line
C. The Integers

Now for each of the numbers 1, 2, 3, … let’s


create its opposite or negative and put it on the
opposite side of the number line, like this:

The set of numbers …, −3, −2, −1, 0, 1, 2, 3, …


(the whole numbers and their opposites) is called the
integers.
D. The Rational Number

A rational number is any number that can be expressed as the


quotient of two integers. We can use any of these fraction notations to
express rational numbers:

a is called the numerator and b is called the denominator. The


denominator cannot be zero. The notation means that we break
something into b equal pieces and we have a of those pieces. For
example if we break a pie into 4 pieces and take 1 piece then we have
1/4 of the pie:
E. The Irational Numbers

The irrational numbers are those that cannot be


expressed as a ratio of two integers. Examples are as well as
the square roots of many other numbers, and special
numbers like e and π. It turns out that there are as many
irrational numbers as rational. Irrational numbers have no
exact decimal equivalents. To write any irrational number
in decimal notation would require an infinite number of
decimal digits. Thus these are only approximations:

√3≈ 1.732, e ≈ 2.718 and π ≈ 3.14,


F. Digits
The 10 symbols 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9, used to
create numbers in the base 10 decimal number system.
Example: the numeral 153 is made up of the digits
"1", "5" and "3".

G. Numerals
The symbols used to denote the natural numbers.
The Arabic numerals 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 are those used
in the Hindu-Arabic number system to define numbers.
H. Fractional Numbers

Any number expressible by the quotient of


two numbers as in a/b, "b" greater than 1, where
"a" is called the numerator and "b" is called the
denominator. If "a" is smaller than "b" it is a
proper fraction. If "a" is greater than "b" it is an
improper fraction which can be broken up into an
integer and a proper fraction.
I. Trancendental Numbers

Any number that cannot be the root of a


polynomial equation with rational coefficients.
They are a subset of irrational numbers examples
of which are Pi = 3.14159... and e = 2.7182818...,
the base of the natural logarithms.
J. Real Number

The set of real numbers including all the


rational and irrational numbers.
