INTRODUCTION

 Single phase induction motor are small motors having a wide field of
usefulness where a poly phase supply is not available. They are generally
used in fans, blowers, washing machines, refrigerators, etc.

 The speed of the induction motor can be varied in a narrow range by varying
the voltage applied to the stator winding.

• This method of speed control is suitable for such applications, where the
load varies approximately as the square of speed, such as centrifugal pump
drives, fan load.

 Controller

 Diode (uncontrolled)

 Transistor (fully -controlled e.g. MOSFET, IGBT, BJT)

 Thyristors (semi - controlled e.g. SCR and TRIAC, fully -controlled GTO and
GCT(IGCT))

Problem Statement
• Controlling motor using mechanical switches or equipment is traditional

and it was risk or hazards on electrical equipment.

• Mechanical switch to ON/OFF the controller circuit is not available in

modern technology because modern technology is very complex and fast.

• Conversion of waveform from supply to load in induction motor using

DC link is complex as compare to AC-to-AC convertor (ac controller).

Objectives of the Study
General Objective
• The main objective of this project is to design and integrate the power control
circuit. At the same time, this power control circuit also will control the speed
of AC motor.

• Control speed of motor using power electronics device.

Specific Objectives
• To improve power electronic drives circuit in modern technologies to control
speed of induction motor.

• To control the speed of single-phase induction motor using AC-to-AC

convertors and the effect of firing angle change on the output.

• By controlling the reactive power of motor, we can easily change the speed of
the motor.

Scope of the Thesis

• The design strategy sets for Dilla University electrical laboratory and
Library case study

• AC- to- AC Convertor

• Phase voltage control

Significance of the Study

• To improve the efficiency, performance and power factor of electrical

motor .

• To increase the performance and life time ventilator

• Using ac voltage controller is the simplest and easy technique or method

for motor controlling in industries and households.

Literature review
• Kamaike, H, [24] presents on his paper a tachometer generator
connected to three-phase squirrel-cage induction motor to generate a
speed signal representing the actual speed of the induction motor and
to compare it with command speed signal to produce a suitable firing
signal. In reference [23] and [22] the single phase AC controller with
cycle skipping method was used to control, start, and stop the three-
phase induction motor.

• Reference [27] Sampathkumar, deals with a technique of controlling
such a single phase induction motor with the help of microcontroller
which enables to control speed of the single phase induction motor as
well as its direction of rotation and also the amount of power consumed.
