Three Alternatives to Current Pad
No Pad Disposable Non-Slip Current Gel Pad with
Shoulder Straps Pad Barrier at Perineum
Alternative Option 1
No Pad
Shoulder Straps
Pros
• This option requires a much smaller amount of cushion material
• It cost only $42 a patient
• It is disposable
Cons
• It has the highest results of potential brachial nerve injury
• Small amounts of sliding have been documented
Alternative Option 2
Disposable Non-Slip pad
Pros
• Disposable
• Comes with everything you need to position patient
Cons
• More expensive then current pad
• It is not recyclable so increase trash load each case
Alternative Option 3
Continued use of Gel Pad but Add Absorbable Pad
Under Perineum
Pros
• The cheapest ($4 per patient) if pad survives all 75 uses before needing
to be disposed of for tears
• This option requires the least amount of work for staff
• Quickest to set up and clean between cases
• Absorbable pad can be sent with linens to be cleaned
Cons
• It is being used on multiply patients
• Staff needs to examine pad after each use checking for tears
Conclusion
It may cost more to have a disposable non-slip pad per case but this
would greatly increase patient satisfaction and would eliminate any
opportunities of cross contamination between patients
