c) Wants, needs and Human Rights
d) Government budget

As a group, you need to attempt all the questions.

Each group will have 5-7 minutes to present their work.

Within your group, think about the food Australians eat, the culture and tradition Australia has. You
may add some other aspects such as weather in Australia,etc. (To add dialogue, click “Insert” on the

 Law and Order
We need laws in our society for many reasons to help our communities to regulate and work properly. They
protect us, our properties and belongings to ensure that everyone behaves the way the community expects. If
there were no laws there would be disorder and not any peace.
Take a look at the different activities in the following table, think about at what age you are allowed to do it by
law and what age do you think you should be allowed to do it.

Abraham Maslow first introduced his concept of a Q4: Can you think of any examples you have
hierarchy of needs in 1943. his hierarchy suggests people heard of where people do not have human rights?

 Government
Your local government has a lot of different issues to deal with and you,
with your group, are your countries government.
You have a budget dedicated to solving issues in your country, with your
group, discussion how you will use the money to improve one or some
of these issues with the budgets assigned to you. You will need to
present your decision to the class.

For each scenario, you need to add up all the costs and compare total
cost with the budget you are given.
The following numbers are the budgets for each scenario

Issue 1
A gang of youths has
gathered and are hanging
around in the local park.
They are intimidating the
local public and leaving
litter, cans and cigarette
butts on the ground which is
bad for the environment.
There is also an increase of
graffiti.
Possible ideas to combat the
issue include:
Building a path and
installing lights and more
litter bins: $7,000.
Hiring a full time security
patrol ranger to and fencing
to close the patrol the park
at night $22,000.
Building a skate park and a
clear playground area for
different age groups: 1

Issue 2
Due to large amount of traffic
going through the main road, it
is becoming cracked and
dangerous. It is difficult to cross
the road and more accidents are
occurring
Possible solutions:

pedestrian crossing with lights to

Build a new bypass that takes
traffic around the centre easing
congestion and improving

Issue 3
Overcrowding in your countries'
current secondary school means
there are over 40 pupils in each
class for one teacher. Some
parents are having to home
school their children which
means not being able to work.
Possible solutions:
Provide a benefit to parents who
are home schooling, estimated

Increase the size of the school by
a new building cost $1.2 million
Train up 5- extra teachers costs
$75,000
Build another secondary school
which will therefore help
increasing population: estimates
cost $11 million
Issue 4
Due to more and more people
hearing about your new country
your population is growing
rapidly and this has led to an
increase in unemployment and
homelessness.
What you could do:
Provide benefits for anyone
without a job of $45 a week.
Estimated cost is $1 million a
year. Stop allowing more people
into the country unless they can
prove they have a job or
somewhere to live. Cost $12
million for increased border
security.
Build more housing in the
suburbs (180 new flats/houses).
$19 million
Build a college to create extra
jobs ( for example,
staff/cleaning/catering/security)
and train people in skilled work
:$29 million.
