Training Design

Md. Abdur Rahim

Training Design
 Training design is developing new training
and educational courses and lessons for your
existing employees. It roots out the gaps in
training and fills them in with new material
for better performances. It also allows your
team to grow their skills rather than becoming
static in their roles.
 Training design is the process of creating a
blueprint for the development of instruction.
Elements of program design
1. Need analysis
2. Learner analysis
3. Setting objectives
4. Designing the training curriculum
5. Selection of training and development methods
6. Selection of training and development media
7. Evaluation
Need analysis
Need analysis helps to identify and prioritize
the most critical problems and needs, and to
determine which of them could be solved by
training or by organizational development
intervention.
Learner analysis
The analysis of the learners could provide essential
information on their trainability, the possible
length of the training and the extent of training to
be carried out.
Difference between people usually influence their
learning capabilities. These are:
 Intellectual ability
 Prior knowledge or expertise in the area to be
taught
 Motivation to learn
Setting objectives
Training objectives are normally derived by
comparing actual and expected job performance
through training and development needs analysis.
Training objectives can be conveniently classified
into the following two categories:
• Program objectives: which include training for
the whole training program.
• Session objectives: which include training for
individual training sessions.
Designing the training curriculum
This stage involves the selecting, sequencing,
producing and reviewing of training modules to
meet the identifies program objectives.
• Selecting: In this area we are concerned with
selecting subject areas and prioritizing the
content under the following headings:
 What the learner must know
 What the learner should know
 What the learner could know
Cont…
• Sequencing: This can be approached in a
number of ways. For example, to start with, the
need for certain knowledge should be identified
before other knowledge can be discussed.
• Production of training modules: It is
recommended that the first step in the modules
production would be the preparation of a plan for
each individual training session, which could use
any type of training method. For example:
lecture, role-play, case-study.
Cont…
• Reviewing: After arranging all the components
in an appropriate sequence, the program designer
should add up the time required. It will also
necessary to revise the objectives, making them
more realistic which the given time constraints.
Selection of training and development
methods
Training and development methods are very
important to support the learning process. There is
a need for continuous improvement in the overall
organization and methodology of training.
Factors to consider in the selection of methods:
 Time and material factors
 The relationship between the principles of effective
learning and teaching methods:
 Motivation
 Active involvement
 Individual approach
Selection of training and development
media
The step of selecting the appropriate media for delivery
of the training in the most efficient manner and at
minimum cost. Factors in selecting media:
 Location
 Numbers of managers to be trained
 When training to be carried out
 Company conditions
 Company preferences
 Fear of attending courses
Evaluation

The last step in the process of program design is

preparing evaluation instruments. This is critically
important because it determines if the learner has
achieved the objectives of the program and also
highlights areas where the program should be
revised.
Training Design and Execution Cycle
Program logistics

Program design also includes a number of areas

which support the training activity and without
which it will not take place or would be
ineffective. These are:
 Planning
 Budgeting
 Timing
 Staffing
 Facilities
 Promotion
Planning

This is a master checklist ensuring that all relenat

areas have been covered. Those are:
 Need analysis
 Should needs be fulfilled through external
courses
 If internal program require then:
• Identify training program
• Decide on course location
• Checkout training facilities
• Conduct training program
Budgeting

The following worksheet outlines the main budget

items with regard to training. These are:
• Staff salaries
• Staff benefits
• Equipment
• Promotional material
• Instructional materials
• Travel
• General overheads
Timing

Some factors which affect the timing of program

and should be taken into consideration at the
desire stage. These are:
 Availability of trainees
 Availability of trainers and facilities
 Lead time for program
Staffing

The planner also needs to consider the availability

of such things-
 Staff members, either training or management
staff
 Outside consultants or guest speakers
 Administration and support staff
Facilities

Factors to be considered in choosing meeting

rooms are suggested below.
 Availability on seminar dates
 Cost
 Seminar room
 Transport
 Supporting service
 General
Promotion

Promotion involves developing strategies and

materials. It also help foster interest in training
program could as follows:
 Direct mail
 Personal contact
 Leaflets
 Posters
 Television and radio advertising
 Newspaper.
Thanks a lot.
