Pancho

rabbit and
the coyote
By Sarah Shurm and Jenna Winter
What is the social justice in this book
- addressing is immigration.
- How immigrants often leave their home countries due to poverty, lack of
opportunities and sometimes violence.
- They come to the United States in hopes of work and a better life.
- Immigrants pay “coyotes” or person who help smuggle people across the US-Mexico
border thousands of dollars and risk their lives to reach their destination.
- Often known as victims of gang violence because they lack protection due to
their unauthorized status.
How can use the book as a way to talk about
hope/social justice
- a method to talk to students about perseverance. Pancho is dedicated to finding his Papa and
fights through a variety of tricky situations in order to do so.
- Pancho is dedicated to being a hard working rabbit
- effectively shows the hardships, sense of Perseverance and ongoing hope that immigrant
families face.
- Since this lesson is being taught to a kindergarten class, we hope to use this book as a tool to
teach patience and the importance of fighting/standing up for what is right.
