What is Engineering???

 defines ENGINEERING:- “the profession in which a

knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences
gained by study, experience, and practice is applied
with judgment to ways to utilize, economically, the
materials and forces of nature for the benefit of
mankind.”

3
What is Engineering???

 Defines ENGINEERING:- “Is The

Profession In Which Uses The
Application Of Math And Science To
Create Something Of Value From Our
Natural Resources For The Benefit Of
Mankind.”
4
Technology Team

 Scientist - Like an engineer, but a primary

goal is the expansion of knowledge and
understanding physical processes.
 Engineer - Applies knowledge of math and
the physical sciences to the efficient design
and construction of usable devices,
structures and processes.
5
What Is The Difference Between A
Scientist And An Engineer?
Scientist: Engineer:
 Develops knowledge  Uses knowledge of math and
from analysis and study science to create something new
Characteristic activity: Characteristic activity: creative
design
research
 Work in disciplines such as:
 Work in fields such as:
 Chemical engineering
Biology  Civil Engineering
Chemistry  Mechanical Engineering
Physics  Electrical Engineering
 A practitioner of science  A practitioner of engineering is an
engineer 6

What Is The Difference Between A
Scientist And An Engineer?
“Scientists discover the world that
exists; engineers create the world that
never was.”

Theodore Von Karman

Engineering Functions

The focus of an engineer’s work typically falls into

one or more of the following areas:
 Research - explore, discover and apply new
principles
 Development - transform ideas or concepts into
production processes
 Design - link the generation of ideas and the
production
9
Engineering Functions

 Production and testing - manufacture and

assemble components or products

 Sales - market engineering products

 Operations - maintain equipment and facilities

 Construction - prior to construction organizes

bids, during construction supervises certain
components of process
10
Engineering Functions

 Management - optimize the use of resources

(equipment, labor, finances)

 Education - teach engineering principles in

university and industrial settings

 Consulting - provide specialized engineering

services the clients.

 May work alone or in partnership other engineers.

Engineering Disciplines at SU

 Chemical Engineering
 Civil Engineering
 Construction Technology And Management
 Electrical And Computer Engineering
 Mechanical Engineering
 Water Resource And Irrigation Engineering

12
Chemical Engineering

 Chemical engineering is a branch of engineering that combines pure

sciences like physics, chemistry mathematics and economics to
produce applications in energy, materials, construction medicine and
healthcare sectors to improve the quality of life.

 Chemical Engineers
 Work with physics, chemistry and biology
 Design medicines, fertilizers, semiconductors,
food, and additives (such as flavorings).
13
Chemical Engineering

 They make the best use of chemistry and engineering

knowledge to turn raw materials into usable products such as,
medicine, plastics, petroleum etc.,

 The field of chemical engineering offers unique opportunities

to make a real difference by applying the principles of chemistry,
biology, physics, and math to solve problems that involve the
production or use of chemicals, fuel, drugs, food, and many other
products.
14
Chemical Engineering

 Chemical engineers are involved in many aspects of plant

design and operation, including safety and hazard assessments,
process design and analysis, control engineering, chemical
reaction engineering, construction specification and operating
instructions.

 The difference between chemical engineers and other types of

engineers is that they apply a knowledge of chemistry in
addition to other engineering disciplines. 15
Chemical Engineering

 Chemical engineers have been referred to as

“Universal Engineers.” because their scientific and
technical mastery is so extensive.

16
Applications And Practice

17
Related Fields And Topics
 Today, the field of chemical engineering is a diverse one, covering areas from
biotechnology and nanotechnology to mineral processing.

 Biochemical engineering Corrosion engineering

 Biological engineering Electrochemical engineering

 Bioprocess engineering Environmental engineering

 Biomedical engineering Food engineering

 Biotechnology engineering Molecular engineering

 Petroleum engineering Process engineering

 Pharmaceutical engineering Plastics engineering

The Contribution of Chemical
Engineering to The Society

1. Fueling The World’s Economies

 The world's economy needs energy to keep it
moving.
 Chemical engineers stretch fossil fuels into
various energy supplies, e.g gasoline, diesel, jet
oil, etc.

22
23
Cont.
2. Creating Cleaner Energy

 Chemical engineers are creating a new generation of clean

energy technologies.

 Nuclear power plant

 Alternative energies such as Wind, Hydraulic, Solar, Wave

and Tidal Energy etc...
3. Products For Growing Populations
 Water purification
 Water desalination
24
Cont.
4. Better Living Through Chemistry
 Chemical engineers have made plastics possible.
5. Stretching Natural Resources
 Chemical engineers make innovative materials.
 Synthetic rubbers
 Bio-plastics
6. Large Scale Production Engineering
 Even if a product was created by a scientist, there is a good
chance it was perfected and made practical by chemical
engineers.
Eg. Penicillin Discovery

26
7. Convenient & Abundant Food
 When popping your favorite ready-to-eat meal in the microwave, thank
chemical engineers!

 Processed food, canned food

 Powder milk

 Sterilized food

8. Healing Diseases & Extending Life

 Chemical engineering has advanced medical science, improving the
quality of life and saving millions of lives.
27
What does it take to be an
Chemical Engineer?
People who become Chemical Engineers:
Are curious about how things work

Solve interesting life problems

Design and experiment

Calculate using math and science

Have ability in maths and chemistry

Work with others as a team

28
Why be an Chemical
Engineer?

 Great variety in your work

 You get to build or improve things

 You get to use your creative ideas to solve problems

 You get to work on a team

 Lots of Job Opportunities

Chemical Engineers are in high demand

There are more Chemical engineering jobs than Chemical

 Earning Potential
 Engineers earn one of the highest salaries of any career with a 4 or 5-
year degree
 From the Bureau of Labor Statistics (2016):

30
Chemical Engineering

The breadth of scientific and technical

knowledge inherent in the profession
has caused some to describe the
chemical engineer as the "Universal
Engineer.“……..

Chemical engineering is ideally suited to students with ability in maths

and chemistry, who enjoy problem solving and aspires to be
successful…..
