Exam Dates
If you miss an exam for an appropriate
reason you must:
1. Email me prior to the start of the exam
2. Bring in the supporting documentation
within 5 school days
Weight will then be transferred to the final
Exam Dates
If you require accommodations through
the Accessible Learning Centre, you
MUST notify me prior to the exam (one
week)
Again, documentation must be provided
Helpful Hints
• All of the material tested will be covered
in the lectures, labs, tutorials or
readings so . . .
– attend all lectures
– do all readings
– attend and participate in all labs
– start making a list of words to know
– if you don’t understand something, ask for
clarification
Course Resources
• Textbook
Principles of Anatomy &
Physiology, Tortora et al, 15th ed

• Socrative (app)

• Visible Body (app)

Course Conduct
Please bring:
cellphones/computers/textbooks to class
as we will be using them during our
active learning time
But TURN CELLPHONE RINGERS OFF!! … or I will
feed it to my cat
Today’s Lesson:
CHAPTER 1: The Human Body
Learning Objectives
1. Compare anatomy and physiology
2. Describe how the body is organized
3. List all of the different body systems
4. Define homeostasis and describe its significance
5. Use appropriate terms to describe anatomical
structures
6. Identify cavities and regions of the body
Anatomy – the study of the
structure of the body

• Form, position, size and relationship

Biceps brachii
Physiology – the study of the
function of the body
• Nutrition, transport, metabolism,
and movement (ie. how things work)

Muscle
contraction
The Human Body:
An Orientation
Levels of Structural
Complexity
• organism increasing
• organ system
• organ
• tissue
• cell
• molecule
Molecules – Groups of atoms held
together by various forces in a
definite arrangement

Water
Sugars
Fats
Proteins
Vitamins
Minerals
Cell
• The
of living organisms
• Each performs a
specific function

liver cell
Tissue
liver cells = liver tissue

• Group of similar cells that

perform a common function
Organ
liver tissue +
connective tissue +
nervous tissue +
cardiovascular tissue
= liver (organ)

• Two or more tissues combine to

perform a specific function(s)
Organ System
• Two or more organs that work
together for a common purpose
esophagus
liver Digestive
stomach system
large intestine
small intestine
Organism
• All organ systems (11 in humans)
working together
The Liver
• So if you took a piece of liver and
looked at it under a microscope…
• And looked with higher
magnification…
• You would see tissue…
• And finally… a cell

the cell)

Overview of
Organ Systems
11 Different Organ Systems
1) integument 5) muscular 9) nervous
Week 2 Week 3 Week 4+5
2) skeletal 6) digestive 10) urinary
Week 3 Week 11 Week 12
3) lymphatic 7) cardio. (cv) 11) reproductive
Week 10 Week 9 Week 13
4) endocrine 8) respiratory
Week 8 Week 7
Homeostasis
• a relatively steady internal state
(while the world around us changes)
• essential for health/life
• usually maintained through
mechanisms
Negative Feedback Loop
Start here 

If homeostasis is altered, our body detects the change and

activates mechanisms in an attempt to put things back to
normal. Once homeostasis is achieved again, those
mechanisms are turned off (more on this in the endocrine unit).

very important!

Body Planes and
Sections
Plane: an imaginary flat surface
• sagittal - separates left from
right What is “mid-sagittal”?
• frontal (coronal) - separates
anterior from posterior
• transverse - separates superior
from inferior
• oblique – diagonal (rarely used)
