Electric Generator
An electric generator is a device that converts
mechanical energy to electrical energy. A generator
forces electric current to flow through an external
circuit.

Types Of Generators :-
 DC Generators = Used for Small Wind turbines.
 AC Generators = Used for Large Wind turbines.
DC GENERATORS
DC generators : A dc generator is an electrical
machine which converts mechanical energy into direct
current electricity.

Field : The static part/stator is called field of the DC

generator.

Armature: Rotating part/rotor is called armature of the

DC generator.
Types of DC generators
Major types of dc generators, classified according to the
manner in which their field flux is produced:

• Shunt generators

• Series generators (commonly used in small wind

turbine systems)

• compounded generators
The Series DC Generator

Figure : The equivalent circuit of a series dc

generator

•A series DC generator is a generator whose field is

connected in series with its armature.
AC GENERATORS
AC generators : An Ac generator is an electrical machine which converts
mechanical energy into alternating current electricity.
Types of AC generators
Major types of Ac generators used in wind turbine systems can be classified
as follows:
1. Asynchronous Generators (Induction Generators).

 Variable/fixed speed Asynchronous Generators.

 Doubly fed induction generators (DFIG).

2. Synchronous Generators.

 Electrically Excited Synchronous Generators (EESG).

 Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators (PMSG).
Asynchronous(Induction)
GENERATORS
1. Asynchronous Generators
(Induction Generators)

An induction generator or asynchronous generator is

a type of AC electrical generator that uses the
principles of induction motors to produce power.
Induction generators operate by mechanically turning
their rotor faster than the synchronous speed.
2. Doubly Fed Induction
Generators
 Are one of the most common types of generator used to
produce electricity in wind turbines.
 Doubly fed electric machines are electric motors or
electric generators that have windings on both
stationary and rotating parts, where both windings
transfer significant power between shaft and electrical
system.
 They allow the amplitude and frequency of their output
voltages to be maintained at a constant value, no
matter the speed of the wind blowing on the wind
turbine rotor.
Synchronous GENERATORS
Synchronous Generators: In synchronous generators, rotor and
stator fluxes rotate at the same speed.
Types of Synchronous generators
Major types of Synchronous generators used in wind turbine
applications can be classified as follows:

1. Electrically Excited Synchronous Generators (EESG).

2. Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators (PMSG).

1. Electrically Excited Synchronous
Generators (EESG).

 In EESG, stator is excited with DC supply and

the rotor is supplied with AC supply.
2. Permanent Magnet Synchronous
Generators (PMSG).
 A permanent magnet synchronous generator is a
generator where the excitation field is provided
by a permanent magnet instead of a coil.
