Can Life Arise Spontaneously? For centuries, many people, lezmned and not, betleved that some forms of life could arise spontaneously from non- living, decaying matter. For example: OBSERVATION: In the 17th century many people believed that fly maggots (Larvae) arose spontaneously from rotting meat. Francesco Redi set out to find the answer. QUESTION: Do fly maggots arise from rotting meat? HYPOTHESIS: Redi proposed that fly maggots arise from hatched eggs laid in decaying meat by flies. If so, then preventing flies from laying eggs in the ratting meat should result in no maggots being generated. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Redi obtained similar pieces of rotting meat and jars in which the meat would be placed. 1 EXPERIMENT: One plece of meat was placed In an open Jar while the other place was placed In a similar Jar that ws then covered witha piece of gauze to keep out any fiying insects, including fies. The meat in each jar was allowad to rt. RESULTS: Seo figure. 1m CONCLUSIONS: QUESTION 1: Was Redi’s hypothesis validated? Explain using the figure. QUESTION 2: What is the control in this experiment and why was it important to have a control? QUESTION 3: Why was it important that Red used gauze to cover the one ar? That is, why not seal it ‘completely?
