MINDANAO
The type of music in the
Mindanao region is based
on two musical cultures,
namely the ISLAMIC and
NON – ISLAMIC CULTURES.
Groups that belong to Islamic
tradition:

 Maguindanaoans
 Maranaos
 Yakans
 Samals
 Tausugs
Groups that belong to Non - Islamic
tradition:

 Manobos
 Bagobos
 Subanons
 Bilaans
 Tirurays
 T’boli
The indigenous Islamic
communities of Mindanao have
various vocal forms for
different occasions. Their vocal
music is focused on topics
dealing with life cycles, folk
epic, religious chants and
Islamic rites.
The Non – Islamic communities
of Mindano region also love to
sing songs about nature, life,
marriage, work or occupation,
rituals, epics, and even about
death.
Kulintang Ensemble
(Islamic group)
Kulintang – consist of eight-graduated sized cylinder.

Gandingan – a set of suspended gongs.

Agong – suspended gong.

Dabakan – a tubular drum.

Babandil – a gong that is slightly bigger than the


smallest kulintang.

Instruments of the Non – Islamic group

Kudlong – a two stringed instrument with a resonator


and a neck.
Takumbo – made from matured bamboo.
Palakpak – made from bamboo consists of two parts
that are struck against each other.
Agong a tamlang – made of bamboo. Sometimes called
the “bamboo gong”.
Suling – a wind instrument made of bamboo.
Tambuli – it is made from carabao horn.
Amel – created from a piece of log covered by animal skin.
Tugo – a short white drum used by the Tirurays tribe.

- Listen to a music by a kulintang ensemble. Then write a


short paragraph to describe the music.

Growth Community

- Research some dance steps used in indigenous dances from


mindanao. Demonstrate the dance in class next meeting.
