How is it achieved ?

FREQUENCY CONTROL
The governor controls the engine speed
and hence generator frequency when not
in parallel.

VOLTAGE CONTROL
The AVR controls the generator voltage
when not in parallel.

PHASE CONTROL
The phase is adjusted by controlling the
generator frequency (governor control)

GOVERNOR / AVR CONTROL


Governors and AVRs suitable for
synchronising have inputs to allow an
external device to influence their control
over the engine speed / generator voltage.
Traditionally this external control took the
form of a potentiometer (variable resistor)

LOAD SHARING

• Active power (W) is the power component


used to supply resistive loads
• Reactive power (V Ar) is the power component
used to supply capactive and inductive loads

ACTIVE POWER CONTROL

• Supplying more fuel to the engine keeps the


speed the same, but increases the engine’s
supply of kW
• Supplying less fuel to the engine keeps the
speed the same but decreases the engine’s
supply of kW

REACTIVE POWER CONTROL

• Supplying more to the alternator excitation


field winding keeps the generator output
voltage the same, but increases the
generator’s supply of V Ar.
• Supplying less to the alternator excitation field
winding keeps the generator output voltage
the same, but decreases the generator’s
supply of V Ar.
