THE CELL
6th Grade
Science
Learning Objective 1
First term 2019
Boston International School
Objective:
To recognize living things and their main features, to value the importance
of our bodies.

Learning objective: Identifying the importance of the cell and the

function of its parts.

Biblical principle: We are God’s perfect creation

Genesis 1:27
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he
him; male and female created he them.

Rule 6: Use English at all times, it is the only way to improve.
Rule 7: Do not translate what your teacher says, please.
Rule 8: Take risks and learn from your mistakes.
MENDING ORIENTED ACTIONS
 If the students take the motivation to misbehave he/she will
less from 1 to ten points of his/her participation mark.
 If the students distract others he/she has to talk in front of the
class and apologize.
 If the students frequently have a bad behavior will be notified
in the folder of behavior.
PORTFOLIO (Divided by terms and it’s a grade)
z

 Cover (Name, grade, likes, dislikes, class objectives)

 PDE copies (If necessary)

 Dictations

PROJECT:
"Inside the cell"
Instructions:
 Each student will present a cell model with the cell parts (small
size), please don’t use a scale model work on poster paper or
a piece of paper.
 Students will write a fantasy story based on the parts of the cell.
 The story will be read in class.
 Each student will comment on the activity in class.
 Compare the importance of the cell and the Holy Spirit in our life

Group: 1- 4 people
Due date February 28 – bring materials.
March 8 – Presentation in L.A. hours.
The Cell
z

• All living things are made up of cells.

• Cells are the smallest working units of all living things.

• All cells come from preexisting cells through cell division.

that controls movement
in and out of the cell
 Double layer.

in plant cells &
bacteria

NUCLEUS

 The cell nucleus is a membrane bound structure that contains the

cell's hereditary information and controls the cell's growth and
reproduction. It is the command center of a eukaryotic cell and is
commonly the most prominent organelle in a cell.
 Distinguishing Characteristics

 The cell nucleus is bound by a double membrane called the nuclear

envelope. This membrane separates the contents of the nucleus from
the cytoplasm.
 Directs cell activities

 Separated from cytoplasm by nuclear membrane

 Contains genetic material - DNA

Nuclear Membrane

 Surrounds nucleus

 Made of two layers

 Openings allow
material to enter and
leave nucleus

Chromosomes

 In nucleus

 Made of DNA

 Contain instructions
for traits &
characteristics

Nucleolus

 Inside nucleus

 Contains RNA to build

proteins

z Cytoplasm

 Gel-like mixture

 Surrounded by cell membrane

 Contains hereditary material

Endoplasmic Reticulum

 Moves materials around in

cell
 Smooth type: lacks
ribosomes
 Rough type (pictured):
ribosomes embedded in

surface
Ribosomes

 Each cell contains

thousands
 Make proteins

 Found on ribosomes &

floating throughout the http://library.thinkquest.org/12413/structures.html

cell
Mitochondria

 Produces energy through

chemical reactions –
breaking down fats &
carbohydrates
 Controls level of water and
other materials in cell
 Recycles and
decomposes proteins, http://library.thinkquest.org/12413/structures.html

fats, and carbohydrates

Golgi Bodies

 Protein 'packaging
plant'
 Move materials
within the cell
 Move materials out
of the cell

http://library.thinkquest.org/12413/structures.html
Lysosome

 Digestive 'plant' for

proteins, fats, and
carbohydrates
 Transports
undigested material
to cell membrane
for removal
 Cell breaks down if
lysosome explodes http://library.thinkquest.org/12413/structures.html
Vacuoles

 Membrane-bound
sacs for storage,
digestion, and waste
removal
 Contains water
solution
 Help plants maintain
shape

Chloroplast

 Usually found in
plant cells
 Contains green
chlorophyll

TISSUES

CELL TISSUE ORGAN SYSTEM

Cells,
z Tissues, Organs, and Systems

 A cell is the smallest unit of living matter; the building

blocks of living things.
 Tissues are groups of cells working together to perform a
certain job.
 Organs are groups of tissues that perform a certain
function.
 Organs working together to carry out a certain life function
are an organ system.
WORKSHEET
Write the number of each kind of cell in the circle of the matching function.
