Applied

Mechanics
Prof. Dr. Eng. Abdelhay M. Abdelhay
Mechanical Engineering Department,
Faculty of engineering, Helwan University

1
What is
Applied Mechanics ?

• Applied mechanics is a branch of the

physical sciences and the practical
application of mechanics.

2
What is
Applied Mechanics ?
Applied mechanics, bridges the gap between physical theory and its
,

application to technology.
It is used in many fields of engineering, especially mechanical
engineering.
In this context, it is commonly referred to as Engineering Mechanics.
Much of modern Engineering mechanics
is based on Isaac Newton's laws of motion, while the modern practice of
their application can be traced back
to Stephen Timoshenko, who is said to be the father of modem
engineering mechanics.

3
What is
Applied Mechanics ?

Within the theoretical sciences, Applied Mechanics

is useful in Formulating new ideas and theories,
discovering and interpreting phenomena, and

developing experimental and computational tools.

4
What is
Applied Mechanics ?

In the application of the natural sciences, Mechanics was said to be

Complemented by Thermodynamics;

which is the study

of heat and more generally energy, and electromechanics, the study of

electricity and magnetism.

5
What is
Applied Mechanics ?

• Applied mechanics describes the

response of bodies (solids and fluids) or
systems of bodies to external forces.

6
Some Examples for Studied Topics in
Applied Mechanics

• Mechanical systems include:

– the flow of a liquid under pressure,
– the fracture of a solid from an applied force,
or
– the vibration of an ear in response to sound.

10
How this COURSE is delivered ?

11
By Self-Study

and

Class- Interaction

12
Here IS HOW ?

1. Different Topics are EQUALLY distributed among the class mates,

2. Prepare a presentation for each topic, including:

main concepts, involved analyses with 2-3 illustrative examples addressing

the presented topic, with some problems.

13
Here IS HOW ?

4. Four days before the class meeting, Pre distribute your presentation

among the whole class members (Soft copy),

5. Allow for your class mates to positively interact with your presented

topic.

6. Once, the topic is presented, it will be your own responsibility as a

learned topic.
