• Nerium oleander----(common oleander).

• Thevetia peruviana---- (yellow oleander)

• Family: Apocynaceae
Description:

Perennial evergreen small tree(1_3m)height.

The flowers are white, pink, red or yellow.

The leaves are in pairs, thick leathery and dark


green.

The fruit is along narrow capsule which splits to


release brown seeds.

Chemical constituents:
1.Cardiac glycosides:
– Oleandrin.
– Neriine.
– Nirianthin .
– Pseudocuraon .
– Folinerin .

is known for its strychnine-like effects

3. Cardio-tonic
4. Diuretic
5. Treatment of Crust psoriasis

N.B!
Oleander is one of poisonous plant contains
numerous of toxic compounds. It is also
known to hold its toxicity even after drying .
About 10-20 leaves consumed by an adult can
cause an adverse reaction, and a single leaf
could be lethal to an infant or child .
Eating eight or more of yellow oleander seeds
may be fatal
Side effects of oleander:
• Ingestion can cause nausea, vomiting, irregular
heart rate, excess salivation, abdominal pain ,
diarrhea, liver or kidney damage, irritation and
redness of lips, gums, tongue, fast breathing,
sweating and stomach pain.

• Also affect the central nervous system causing


some symptoms like drowsiness, tremors or
shaking of the muscles ,seizures ,collapse, and
even coma that can lead to death .
Contra-indications:
• Oleander is contra indicated in
pregnancy and breast feeding women.
Possible drug interactions:
Oleander can increase the side effects of
some drugs:
- other heart-active drugs, such as digoxin
(Lanoxin®) or anti-arrhythmics.
- drugs that may lower potassium levels,
such as laxatives or some diuretics (drugs
that increase urine flow)
Folk uses:
