Background of the Study
• Philippines as a tropical country have a wide range of
plants and a rich biodiversity. Being blessed with fertile
land, the people of this country enable to yield different
kinds of crops. With the farmers’ hard works and
favorable climate had resulted to the production of root
crops, vegetables, and fruit- bearing trees. One of the
known tropical plants that thrived in the country is banana.
Bananas are the most common and widely grown fruit
crops and one of the country’s major dollar earners
(Department of Agriculture, 2010).
• Bananas are source of food consumption to Filipinos and
can be exported to other countries. Exported bananas are
produced by Filipino- owned firms and multinational
corporations while the small and medium scale farmers
produced bananas for either exported to multinationals or
directly to traders, and smallholder farmers grown
bananas in their backyards for home consumption
(www.promusa.org, 2016).
• According to FruiTrop (April 2013), Philippines is the second
largest exporter of bananas after Ecuador with 2.6 M tons
exported in 2012. According to Philippine Statistics Authority,
for the period of January to March 2018, production of
banana increased by 2.1 percent from 2.10 million metric tons
in 2017 to 2.14 million metric tons this year and more than
one third or 36.7 percent of total banana production was from
Davao Region. These proved that the production of bananas
is greatly in demand not only across the country but also,
around the world and an important crop because it helped to
increase economic income.
Bananas are not only essential because of their crops but
other parts of the plant are also valuable. For example,
banana pseudo stem can be a source of fiber to make and
the leaves have many medicinal purposes and can be used
as wrapping for foods. But the sap is being thrown away so
the researchers will used the sap as water substitute for
lettuce (Lactuca sativa).
• Lettuce is a green leafy vegetables commonly used in
salads, soup, garnishes in hamburgers and sandwich, wrap in
meats and as a decorative plating that give a vibrant color to food.
It is eaten raw or can be simmered like other vegetables.Lettuce
belongs to the family Compositae and it is one of the most popular
salad crops and occupies the largest production area among
salad crops in the world. It is popular for its delicate, crispy texture
and slightly bitter taste with milky juice as fresh condition. It is the
most popular amongst the salad vegetable crops (Squire et al.,
1987 )
• Lettuce is a worldwide known crop exported and imported
throughout the country mainly because of its nutritional
value especially as a dietary food. However the nutritional
properties differ among lettuce types.Leafy types contain
micronutrients than headed types.Dark green types have
more carotene, iron and vitamin C.Butterhead types are
relatively more nutritious than crisphead
lettuce.(http://www.freefarm.org/wp-
content/thesis/skins/classic/pdf/Lettuce.pdf)
• The researchers will conduct this study to find another
alternative water source using the banana pseudo stem
sap and will be applied to lettuce (Lactuca sativa).
Statement of the Problem
• General Statement:
This study aims to determine the effect of banana
(Musa acuminata) pseudo stem sap as water substitute for
lettuce (Lactuca sativa).
• Specific Statement:
Specifically, this study will answer the following
questions:
1 . What is the effect of the following treatments to the
growth and yield of lettuce (Lactuca sativa):
a. Fresh weight
b. Height
c. Number of leaves
d. Length of roots
2. What is the significant difference between the Banana
(Musa acuminata)pseudo stem sap as water substitute and
pure water in the growth and yield of letuce (Lactuca sativa)
in terms of:
a. Fresh weight
b. Height
c. Number of leaves
d. Length of roots
Hypothesis
2. There is no significant difference between the Banana
(Musa acuminata) pseudo stem sap as water substitute and
pure water for lettuce (Lactuca sativa).
Conceptual Framework of the Study
This study aims to determine the effect of banana (Musa
acuminata) pseudo stem sap as water substitute for lettuce
(Lactuca sativa).
Research Paradigm
Indepenedent Variable Depenedent Variable
Experimental:
Treatment A- 100% banana pseudo stem
sap
Treatment B- 50% banana pseudo stem Growth and yield of lettuce (Lactuca
sap + 50% pure water sativa) in terms of:
Treatment C- 75% banana pseudo stem + a. Fresh weight
25% pure water b. Height
Treatment D- 75% pure water + 25% c. Number of leaves
banana pseudo stem sap d. Lenght of roots

Control:
Treatment E- 100% pure water
Significance of the Study
• This is significant to the following person/s:
Farmers- this study will beneficial that they will used
banana pseudo stem sap as water substitute for lettuce
Community- that they will conserve water and used
banana pseudo stem as water substitute.
Future Researchers- that they will used this study as their
basis for their future studies in relevance with water
substitutes and banana pseudo stem.
Scope and Delimitations
• This study is only limited in finding the effect of banana
pseduo stem sap as water substitute for lettuce (Lactuca
sativa). This study will be conducted at Brgy. Barasan
Leon, Iloilo on November- January, 2018 for 2 months.
There will be five treatments including the positive control.
Treatment A is 100% banana pseudo stem sap.Treatment
B is 50% banana pseudo stem sap + 50% pure water.
Treatment C is 75% banana pseudo stem + 25% pure
water.Treatment D is 75% pure water + 25% banana
pseudo stem sap.
• In every treatment, there will be three (3) replications.
Banana pseudo stem will be gathered at Brgy. Siol Sur,
Leon, Iloilo and the age of banana pseudo stem is
unidentified. The type and amount of soil, amount of
sunlight, amount and type of fertilizer and insectiside will
be held constant through out the study. All materials
needed including the seedlings were purchased to an
agricultural store. The tomatoes were watered from
seedling to the mature and harvest stage. The watering
will be at 7 am in the morning and 5 pm in the evening.

and formed by the tightly packed overlapping leaf sheaths
(Promusa.org, 2018).
