HIGH STRENGTH CONCRETE

Y Concrete is generally classified as NSC,

HSC,UHSC.
Y HSC above 40MPa
Y Particularly used in construction of high
rise buildings and long span bridges.
Special methods of making HSC
Y Seeding
Y Revibration
Y High speed slurry mixing
Y Use of admixtures
Y Inhibition of cracks
Y Sulphur impregnation
Y Use of cementious aggregates
SEEDING
Y This involves adding a small percentage of
finely ground ,fully hydrated portland
cement to the fresh concrete mix.
Y The mechanism by which strength is
developed is difficult to explain.
REVIBRATION
Y Concrete undergoes plastic shrinkage.
Mixing water creates capillary channels,
bleeding and water accumulates at some
places. Controlled revibration removes all
these defects and increases strength
HIGH SPEED SLURRY MIXING
Y This process involves the advance
preparation of cement-
cement-water mixture which
is then blended with aggregate to produce
concrete.
Y Higher compressive strength is attributed
to effective hydration of cement by
vigorous blending
USE OF ADMIXTURES
Y Use of water reducing agents
INHIBITION OF CRACKS

Y Inhibition for the propagation of cracks increases the

strength.
Y Replacement of 2- 2-3% of fine aggregate by polythene or
polystyrene lenticules 0.025mm tk & 3 to 4 mm in dia
results in high strength. Upto 105n MPa.

SULPHUR IMPREGNATION

Y The process consists of moist curing the fresh concrete

specimen for 24 hrs, drying them at 120ÛC for 24 hrs,
immersing the specimen is molten sulphur under
vacuum for 2 hrs and then releasing vacuum & soaking
them for an additional hr for further infiltration of sulphur.
Strength up to 58 MPa
USE OF CEMENTICIOUS AGGREGATES
Y Using ALAG as aggregate , strength up
to 125 MPa is obtained with w-
w-c ratio
0.32

Y A high-
high-strength concrete is always a high
high--
performance concrete, but a high-
high-
performance concrete is not always a
high--strength concrete. ACI defines a
high
high--strength concrete as concrete that
high
has a specified compressive strength for
design of 6,000 psi (41 MPa) or greater

Ú

Y The American Concrete Institute (ACI) defines

high--performance concrete as concrete meeting
high
special combinations of performance and
uniformity requirements that cannot always be
achieved routinely when using conventional
constituents and normal mixing, placing and
curing practices. a high-
high-performance concrete is
one in which certain characteristics are
developed for a particular application and
environment.
characteristics that may be considered critical for
an application are:
Y * Ease of placement
Y * Compaction without segregation
Y * Early age strength
Y * Long-
Long-term mechanical properties
Y * Permeability
Y * Density
Y * Heat of hydration
Y * Toughness
Y * Volume stability
Y * Long life in severe environments
Y Typically, HPC will have a water-
cementitious materials ratio (w/cm) of 0.4
or less. Achievement of these low w/cm
concretes often depends on the effective
use of admixtures to achieve high
workability, another common characteristic
of HPC mixes.
Y Reduction in w/c ratio to less than 0.3 will
improve the qualities of transition zone to
give inherent qualities of HPC
Y To improve the qualities of transition zone, use
silica fumes for strength above 80 MPa
Y The best quality fly ash & GGBS are used
Y Use super plasticizer to improve workability
Y w/c ratio range is 0.25 to 0.3
AGGREGATES IN HPC
Y The bond between aggregate & hydrated
cement paste is strong that it results in
significant transfer of stress across transition
zone.
Y There fore strength of aggregates is a factor that
limits strength of HPC
Size
Y Upto 100 MPa - 20 mm
Y Above 100MPa ± 10 to 12 mm
Shape
Y Crushed aggregate cubic in shape
