• Example
4 2 × 5 + 4 14
2 = =
5 5 5
Addition : (Same denominators)
When adding fractions with the same denominator, find the total of the
numerators
𝐴 𝐶 𝐴+𝐶
+ =
𝐵 𝐵 𝐵
Example:
3 4 3+4 7
+ = =
13 13 13 13
Subtractions : (Same Denominators)
When subtracting fractions with the same denominators, Subtract the
numerators in order of appearance
𝐴 𝐶 𝐴−𝐶
− =
𝐵 𝐵 𝐵
Example:
3 4 3−4 1
− = =−
13 13 13 13
Multiplication of fractions
When multiplying fractions simply multiply the numerators together
and the denominators together
𝐴 𝐶 𝐴×𝐶
× =
𝐵 𝐷 𝐵×𝐷
Example:
3 4 3 × 4 12 1
× = = =
8 9 8 × 9 72 6
Example:
3 4 3 × 9 4 × 8 27 + 32 59
+ = + = =
8 9 8×9 9×8 72 72
Subtraction : (different denominators)
When subtracting fractions with different denominators
1. Multiply the numerator by the opposite denominator
2. Multiply the denominators together
3. Subtract the numerators in the order they appear
𝐴 𝐶 𝐴 × 𝐷 𝐶 × 𝐵 (𝐴 × 𝐷) − (𝐵 × 𝐶)
− = − =
𝐵 𝐷 𝐵×𝐷 𝐷×𝐵 𝐵×𝐷
Example:
3 4 3 × 9 4 × 8 27 − 32 5
− = − = =−
8 9 8×9 9×8 72 72
Division of fractions
When dividing by fractions, the divisor becomes its inverse and the division becomes a
multiplication.
Keep, change and flip
1. fraction remains unchanged
2. Change the division to a multiplication
3. Flip the dividing fraction
4. Multiply the fractions together
𝐴 𝐶 𝐴 𝐷 𝐴×𝐷
÷ = × =
𝐵 𝐷 𝐵 𝐶 𝐵×𝐶
Example
3 4 3 9 3 × 9 27
÷ = × = =
8 9 8 4 8 × 4 32
