SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

SOLID WASTE Solid waste is any discarded or abandoned element, which may be solid, liquid, semi-solid or containerized gaseous
material. In other words as garbage, trash, residue and waste are used as substitute for the term ’solid waste’.
Waste is all around us. It has been
a constant of our existence from
the very first day we were born. It
cannot be avoided - in fact, waste
is a creation and part of nature.

SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT Systematic administration of activities which provide for the collection, source separation, storage,
transportation, transfer, processing, treatment, and disposal of solid waste.
• India produces 62m tonnes of urban waste annually, out of which 5.6m tonnes consist of plastic waste, 0.17m constitute of
biomedical waste, 7.90m tonnes constitute hazardous waste while 15 lakh ton is e-waste.
• Studies reveal that India discards around 0.6 m tonnes of plastic waste into oceans annually. It has been ranked as 12th in
producing plastic waste and has been ranked as 10 th for generation of municipal solid waste. It is 5th in generating e-waste.
• After Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru comes 2 nd and 3 rd by producing 98,000 m and 92,000 m tonnes respectively.
CAUSES OF SOLID WASTE POLLUTION TYPES OF SOLID WASTE POLLUTION SOLID WASTES
1. Over Population 2. Affluence They are categorized as municipal waste, industrial waste, and hazardous wastes.
3. Technology 4. Urbanization Municipal waste - domestic activities.
Industrial waste - industrial activities and hazardous wastes - causes hazard to plants,
animals and human beings.
Hazardous waste - radioactive substances, chemicals, biological wastes, flammable
wastes and explosives.
THE POSITIVES OF SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT
1. Health hazard is reduced.
2. Can mainly maintain bio-diversity.
3. Reduces all types of waste.
4. Inter-generational equity.
5. Creates employment.

EFFECTS OF SOLID WASTE

1. Land use.
2. Toxins.
3. Methane.
4. Smell .
5. Oceans.
DISADVANTAGES OF SOLID WATSE MANAGEMENT
1. The process is not always cost-effective.
2. The resultant product has a short life.
3. The sites are often dangerous.
4. The practices are not done uniformly.
5. Waste management can cause more problems.
NEED FOR SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT
1. Waste management is collection, transportation, and disposal of garbage, sewage and
other wasteproducts.
2. The most important reason for waste collection is the protection of the environment and
health of the population.
3. Rubbish an waste can cause air and water pollution.
4. To control different types of pollution, i.e., air pollution, soil pollution, water pollution etc.;
5. To stop the spread of infectious diseases.;
6. To conserve all our environmental resources, including forest, minerals water etc.;
7. To recycling of hazardous wastes for further production.
GOALS OF SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT
1. Securing ecologically sustainable development while promoting justifiable
economic and social development.
2. Avoiding and minimizing the generation of waste.
3. Reducing, re-using, recycling and recovering waste.
4. Promoting and ensuring the effective delivery of waste services.
5. Treating and safely disposing of waste as a last resort.
6. Remediating land where contamination presents a significant risk of harm
to health or the environment.
7. Achieving integrated waste management planning.
8. Sound budgeting and financial management for waste services.
9. Adequate staffing and capacity for waste management.
10. Effective monitoring and reporting on performance with waste functions.
11. Effective monitoring and reporting on performance with waste functions.
12. Ensure that people are aware of the impact of waste on their health, well-
being and the environment.
