HOW TO INTEGRATE

LITERACY AND NUMERACY

SKILLS IN TEACHING?
Adopted from PPST Resource Package
(Module 2: Use a Range of Teaching Strategies that Enhance Learners
Achievement in Literacy and Numeracy Skills.)
LITERACY
•refers to the capability
one acquires in order to
read, understand, and
construct textual
material
LITERACY
•Is not just confined merely
learning to read and write but
it also encompasses a range of
more complex skills including
the ability to apprehend ideas
and concepts.
LITERACY
•teachers of all subjects
are responsible for
supporting children in
developing literacy
LITERACY ACROSS CURRICULUM AREAS

•Principle 1:Literacy
instruction is embedded
in all learning areas
Goal:
•To build a learner’s
comprehension, writing
skills and overall skills in
communication.
Strategies:
•Let the students write,
read, or talk about the
concepts.
LITERACY ACROSS CURRICULUM AREAS

•Principle 2:Literacy
instruction considers the
learner’s key stage
Goal:
•To build vocabulary
knowledge among
learners and make
meaning of what they
read.
Strategies:
•Reading stories or
articles and choosing
unfamiliar words and
introduced them through
pictures or context clues
LITERACY ACROSS CURRICULUM AREAS

•Principle 3:Teaching
literacy is strengthened
by building links to the
real world
Goal:
•To enhance literacy with
creativity through
exploring literacy at
home and in the
community
Strategies:
•Letting students to go
outside and observe
what are the street signs
that they can see and let
them identify its meaning
Strategies:
•Conducting interviews in
the community about the
concepts.
NUMERACY
•ability to understand and use
mathematical knowledge for
calculating problem solving,
and interpreting information
in order to arrive at educated
and well-informed decisions.
NUMERACY ACROSS CURRICULUM AREAS

•Principle 1:Numeracy
should be developed
consistently across different
areas of learning
Goal:
•To promote numeracy in all
subject areas to provide
opportunities for students to
improve their accuracy and
learn how to interpret
Strategies:
•History- sequencing
numbers and dates to help
learners see why some
events happened such as
the starts of a kind of war.
Strategies:
•Science – making
measurements, collecting
data, comparing and
interpreting data, graphs
and diagrams
Strategies:
•English – collecting and
interpreting data, graphs
and diagrams;
sequencing events of the
stories.
Strategies:
•MAPEH- measurements,
practical activities.
NUMERACY ACROSS CURRICULUM AREAS

•Principle 2:Numeracy skills

are built through
meaningful and fun-filled
activities.
Goal:
•To promote active and
purposeful kind of
learning through
numeracy.
Strategies:
•applying numeracy in a form
of game
•TLE subject, letting the
students to record in the table
their spending for their
“baon” or allowance
