INDIA’S TRADE IN MEDICINAL PLANTS
 80- 90 % herbs are collected from forest.
 India has 2.4 % of world’s area but 8 % global diversity and one of
the 12 mega- diversity hot spots
 India’s Export of MAPs in 2008 - Rs. 646 crores.
 Trade of Ayush in India in 2008 - Rs. 6,000 crores
 Trade related to ayurveda in 2008 - Rs. 5,500 crores
 India Shares just 1 % of world market.
 Medicinal plants related trade in India US$ 347 billion
 Approx 7800 manufacturing units are in India.
 Nutraceutical market in India is Approx. US$ 600 Million.

INDIA’S HERBAL MARKET SCENARIO
 60% of India’s export consists of medicinal plants & 40% is value added herbal
products.

 India’s export of medicinal plants & herbal products worth Rs 700 crores annually.

 India's ranking in the world pharmaceutical industry – 17th.

 10 top destinations for Indian exports –USA accounts for over Rs.160 crores &
Japan –above Rs.110 crores. In percentage terms ,USA and Japan account for 56%
of the Indian exports.

 A 21st century State, came into being on November 1, 2000.
 Good Governance is the highest priority in this fast track state.
 Bestowed with both policy stability as well as political stability.
 People are friendly, open, warm and industrious.

 May is the hottest month and December-January are the coldest ones.

dolomite, lime, tin, granite etc .

 After screening the botanical synonyms = 1525
 No. of genera = 911
 No. of families = 196
 Total taxa at subspecies level = 14
 Commercially traded herbal species of state = 312
 “ High Volume Trade” species(> 100 T/yr ) = 42
 “Very High Vol. Trade” species(>1000 T/Yr) = 33
 (75 Species are among top 100 medicinal plant traded in India.)

TRADE PRACTICES OF MAPs
 Communities/individuals collect medicinal plants
through non-destructive means and sell them in the open
market at negotiable price.
 Traders collect the medicinal plants from individuals or
from the local bazaar at negotiable price.
 Cultivated crops are supplied through Govt. agencies and
directly also to the consumers.
 After grading and primary processing it is supplied to
big consumers at negotiable price.
 The Govt. is now planning to trade the Medicinal plants
through herbal mandi’s.
MARKET FOR MAPs PRODUCE
 MAP’s trade in the state is approx Rs. 300 Crores.
 Trade of nationalized forest produce is approx. Rs. 225 Crores.
 More than 100 state owned & 20 private MAP’s processing
units are established.
 Main national level market for MAP’s of the state are - Delhi,
UP, Maharastra, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and AP.
 Main market for MAP’s in the state - Jagdalpur, Jashpur,
Dhamtari, Raigarh,Raipur,Bilaspur etc.
 ISM Drug manufacturing expertise is yet to develop in the

ESSENCE OF INDUSTRIAL POLICY
The new industrial policy ( 2004-2009) focuses on :
 To promote industries based on natural resources across the state.
 Attract industrial investment by providing necessary infrastructure for investment.
 To give special importance to private sector participation.
 Development of herbal parks .
 Processing of medicinal, aromatic and dye plants .
 Provision of common facilities .
 Add maximum value to state’s abundant natural resources.
 Create maximum employment opportunities by setting up
industries.
 Attract industrial investment in the state.
 Promote exports from the State set up “special economic zone “ ,
“agro export zone “ & “ air cargo complex”.
INCENTIVES FOR INVESTORS
The industrial policy envisages various direct incentive :
 Interest subsidy, Interest subsidy for technology up-gradation, etc.

 Infrastructure development / fixed capital investment subsidy.

 Exemption from electricity duty.

 Exemption from stamp duty.

 Exemption from entry tax.

 Allotment of plots at concessional premium in industrial areas.

 Exemption from land diversion fee.

ON GOING IMPORTANT PROJECTS
 Mainstreaming Conservation & Sustainable use of Medicinal Plants
Diversity – 7 years project (Funded by UNDP-GEF)
 Biodiversity Conservation through Community Based Central Resource
Management Project- 3 years project (Funded by UNDP-GEF ).
 MAPs Plantation over 3660 hac of land with financial outlay of nearly
Rs.6 Crores in 11th Five year plan through Forest Development
Agencies (FDA).
 In-situ conservation on 1,22,200 hac & Ex-situ cultivation on 100 hac
forest land with financial outlay of nearly Rs. 30 crores under People’s
Protected Area (PPA) scheme.
 Development of Herbal Gardens, School herbal gardens, QPM centers
experimental black pepper & Mehndi block plantation etc.
ESTABLISHMENT OF HERBAL PARK
 A state- of- the art herbal and medicinal park to be set up near
NH-6. in Dhamtari district of the state.
 The area is 151.21 acres.
 50 Kms from the state capital –Raipur.
 Maximum day summer temp. 46.6 C.
 Minimum Night winter Temp. 5.0 C.
 Climate : Hot terried zone.
 In this park pre- processing & manufacturing of ISM & H drugs
industries will be established by private sector.
