This document provides an overview of a project to study the performance parameters of a faulty Greaves MK-25 single cylinder petrol engine. It includes sections on engine specifications, literature review, methodology, work plan, and conclusion. The methodology section indicates that the team plans to first troubleshoot the engine to identify problems, then study and analyze the issue, rectify it, and finally conduct performance tests. Upon initial inspection, potential problems identified with the carburetor and spark plug. The overall goal is to understand engine performance through troubleshooting and repair of the given engine.

ANAND A S Dept of MECHANICAL ENGG GOKUL G S MUHAMMED RIYAS A Introduction Literature Survey Engine Specifications Methodology Work Plan Conclusion Petrol Engines o A petrol engine is an internal combustion engine with spark ignition designed to run on petrol and similar volatile fuels. o In most petrol engines the fuel and air are usually premixed before compression. o The premixing was formerly done in a caburetor, but now it is done by electronically controlled fuel injection. o In a four stroke engine there are mainly four processes namely: 1. Suction Stroke 2. Compression Stroke 3. Expansion Stroke 4. Exhaust Stroke o An Otto cycle is an idealized thermodynamic cycle that describes the functioning of a petrol engine. o The P-V and T-S diagram of Otto cycle based on petrol engines is: o For the present project we have referred the following journals and research papers: DOI: 10.13140/RG.2.1.3656.6803Conference: Recent Advances & Challenges in Energy., At MIT, Manipal, Volume: ISSN 0974-5904, pp – 81-85 IJERT ISSN:2278-0181 IEJRT VOL-2 ISSUE-5 Authored by Narendra. Make Greaves MK-25 Number of cylinders-1 Type 4 stroke, Air cooled Piston displacement - 250 cc Bore size -70mm Stroke - 66.7mm Compression Ratio - 4.67:1 Power (BHP) – 2.5kW RPM – 3000 Orifice Diameter – 20mm Starting – Rope start Load – 2.2kVA DC GENERATOR WITH 2.5kW RESISTANCE LOAD BANK 0.1 ph AC GENERATOR The engine is started using a rope start (recoil start). This engine is commonly used in 3-wheelers. It delivers a Brake Horse Power of 2.5kW. o As part of our project, we have studied GREAVES-MK-25 four stroke single cylinder air cooled petrol engine.
o After examining the engine, we tried to conduct a test to
Study the Performance Parameters of the Engine, but failed. o Morse Test is conducted by cutting off the power to first cylinder and taking the load to retain the rated speed of the other three cylinders. o Similar procedure is carried out for finding the corresponding loads when the other cylinders are cut off. o After that the load is found out when all the four cylinders are working. o The important point to note is that only one cylinder is cut off at a time. o The formulas used for calculations are:
IHP= ((PLAN x n) / 2) ÷ 450
BHP = 2πNT/60 Mechanical Efficiency= (BHP÷IHP)×100 Thermal Efficiency =(BHP ÷ Power value of fuel)×100 o As our project, we have taken this faulty engine into consideration and have decided to troubleshoot in order to find what the problem is and do a study on performance parameters of the engine. o September 14 – November 15 Troubleshooting and trying to find what the problem is. o November 16 – December 16 Study and analysis of the problem. o December 17 – February 17 Rectifying the problem. o February 18 – March 18 Upon primary inspection, we have found out: Problems in carburetor and spark plug could be the probable reasons that hinders the proper functioning of the engine. Potential carburetor problems: Carburetor out of adjustment. Carburetor leaks. Carburetor floods. o For this project we have taken into consideration a single cylinder four stroke petrol engine and hopefully we will be able to understand more about engines and their performance.
o By studying and rectifying the given problem ,we are
expecting to be helpful to our upcoming batches and ourselves.
